Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conceptualize, prototype, and build engaging levels, from initial paper maps and 2D layouts to fully realized 3D blockouts within the game engine.
  • Take ownership of entire levels or significant gameplay areas, driving them from a high-level concept to a polished, final state.
  • Script complex gameplay events, encounters, and cinematic moments using visual scripting tools (e.g., Unreal Blueprints, Unity PlayMaker) or proprietary engine languages.
  • Collaborate with artists to define the environmental storytelling, visual language, and aesthetic direction for your levels, ensuring art supports gameplay.
  • Work closely with Systems Designers to integrate and showcase core game mechanics in your level layouts and encounter designs.
  • Design and iterate on level layouts to create compelling flow, pacing, and interesting sightlines for the player.

  • Implement and tune combat encounters, balancing enemy placement, AI behavior, and resource distribution to create varied and appropriate challenges.
  • Craft and refine player navigation paths, ensuring intuitive guidance through level geometry, lighting, and environmental cues.
  • Conduct regular playtesting sessions on your levels, gather feedback from the team and QA, and iterate on the design to improve the player experience.
  • Meticulously balance difficulty, risk, and reward throughout your levels to create a satisfying and well-paced progression curve.
  • Ensure your level designs meet performance budgets and technical constraints by optimizing geometry, actor counts, and script complexity.
  • Champion the player's perspective, acting as their advocate during design discussions to ensure an intuitive and enjoyable experience.
  • Design and implement puzzles, objectives, and interactive elements that challenge players and complement the core gameplay loop.
  • Collaborate with Narrative Designers to integrate story beats, dialogue, and lore seamlessly into the level progression and environment.
  • Block out and build gameplay spaces that consider all aspects of the player's toolset, including movement, combat, and other special abilities.

Secondary Functions

  • Create and maintain detailed design documentation, including level walkthroughs, flow charts, and encounter specifications for the development team.
  • Mentor and provide constructive feedback to junior designers, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented team environment.
  • Actively participate in peer reviews of levels and gameplay systems, providing insightful and actionable feedback to other designers.
  • Collaborate with the QA department to identify, reproduce, and resolve gameplay bugs and functionality issues within your levels.
  • Stay current with industry trends, playing new games and analyzing their level design to inform and inspire your own work.
  • Assist in the creation of pre-production and vertical slice content to prove out new gameplay concepts and establish a quality bar.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep proficiency with modern 3D game engines, particularly Unreal Engine (including Blueprints) or Unity (including ProBuilder/PlayMaker).
  • Strong experience with visual scripting languages for creating complex gameplay logic, AI behaviors, and cinematic sequences.
  • Solid understanding of 3D modeling/blockout tools such as Maya, 3ds Max, or Blender for creating initial level geometry.
  • Experience with version control software like Perforce or Git, essential for collaborative development environments.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret gameplay metrics and player feedback data to make informed design decisions.
  • Knowledge of fundamental architectural principles, composition, and visual design theory to create aesthetically pleasing and functional spaces.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience demonstrated through a strong portfolio.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Game Design, Interactive Entertainment, or a related discipline.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5+ years of professional experience in a Level Design role within the games industry.

  • A strong portfolio showcasing completed levels, design documentation, and examples of scripting or gameplay implementation.
