Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Delivers exceptional front-line customer service to a diverse community of patrons, answering inquiries in-person, by phone, and via email regarding library services, policies, and resources.
- Executes all circulation desk procedures with precision using the Integrated Library System (ILS), including checking library materials in and out, renewing items, and managing patron accounts.
- Registers new patrons for library cards, accurately verifying information and clearly explaining library borrowing policies, user responsibilities, and available services.
- Handles financial transactions responsibly, including the collection of fines and fees for overdue, damaged, or lost materials, and accurately balances the cash drawer.
- Provides direct assistance to patrons in locating materials within the library and through the online public access catalog (OPAC), offering basic reference and readers' advisory support.
- Accurately sorts and shelves books, periodicals, and audiovisual materials according to the Dewey Decimal System or other established classification methods, ensuring materials are easily accessible.
- Performs regular shelf-reading to maintain the correct order of the collection, identifying and correcting shelving errors to improve the patron browsing experience.
- Assists patrons with the use of public access computers, printers, scanners, photocopiers, and other library technology, providing basic troubleshooting and guidance.
- Processes and manages patron holds and interlibrary loan (ILL) requests, from retrieving items off the shelf to preparing them for pickup or transit to other library branches.
- Empties book drops regularly throughout the day, checking in returned materials promptly to make them available for the next patron.
- Interprets and clearly communicates library policies and procedures to the public, handling patron concerns and complaints with tact and professionalism.
- Maintains a welcoming, clean, and organized library environment by tidying public areas, straightening furniture, and ensuring displays are neat and current.
- Conducts searches for items reported as missing, lost, or claimed returned, meticulously checking shelves, carts, and problem areas to resolve account discrepancies.
- Performs opening and closing procedures for the library or specific service desks, ensuring the facility is secure and ready for public use or shutdown.
Secondary Functions
- Physically processes new library materials by applying spine labels, barcodes, protective covers, and security sensors to prepare them for circulation.
- Assists in the preparation and execution of library programs, workshops, and community events, which may include setting up rooms, managing registration, and providing support.
- Mends and performs minor repairs on damaged library materials, such as books and media cases, to extend their circulation life.
- Contributes to the creation of engaging and timely promotional displays, bulletin boards, and merchandising of the collection to highlight specific themes, genres, or new arrivals.
- Compiles and records routine library statistics, such as circulation numbers, door counts, and computer usage, to support data-driven decision-making.
