Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive vehicle inspections and road tests to identify mechanical, electrical, and safety issues; document findings in service orders and recommend repairs or preventive maintenance to the service advisor.
  • Use computerized diagnostic equipment (OBD-II scanners, OEM scan tools, multimeters, oscilloscopes) to diagnose engine performance, emissions, drivability, ABS, airbags, and body-control module faults and determine root causes.
  • Repair and replace engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, drive axles, and other major drivetrain components following OEM procedures, torque specifications, and manufacturer service bulletins.
  • Service and repair brake systems (hydraulic, ABS, electronic parking brakes), including pad and rotor replacement, caliper service, brake line repair, and bleeding systems to manufacturer standards.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems, including battery testing, alternator replacement, starter diagnosis, wiring harness repair, module replacement, and semiconductor/component-level troubleshooting when required.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance services: oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks and flushes (coolant, transmission, brake, differential), tire rotation, wheel alignment checks, and multi-point inspections.
  • Diagnose and service HVAC systems, including compressor replacement, refrigerant recovery/recharge (EPA 609 where applicable), blend door and climate-control actuator repairs, and heater core service.
  • Troubleshoot and repair steering and suspension systems: shocks/struts, ball joints, control arms, tie rods, steering racks, and perform alignment verifications per OEM specs.
  • Conduct computerized calibrations and software updates for ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) components such as lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and forward-collision sensors after repairs that affect sensor alignment.
  • Perform transmission diagnostics and repairs (automatic and manual), including fluid exchanges, clutch service, solenoid replacement, and reprogramming/learning procedures as required.
  • Inspect and repair fuel systems: fuel pump diagnostics, injector replacement, fuel pressure testing, and fuel system cleaning as required by OEM service recommendations.
  • Carry out battery and charging system diagnostics for conventional, start-stop, and hybrid vehicles; service 12V and high-voltage battery systems according to manufacturer safety protocols and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Diagnose and repair hybrid and electric vehicle systems where certified: inverter/converter repairs, high-voltage wiring inspections, HV battery service (within scope of certification), and regenerative braking diagnostics.
  • Perform emissions-related repairs and testing to pass state and local inspections, document repairs for warranty or regulatory compliance, and complete necessary emission control system adaptations and relearns.
  • Evaluate warranty claims, prepare detailed repair documentation, and liaise with parts and warranty departments to support warranty coverage submissions and rework procedures.
  • Order, inspect, and manage parts inventory related to assigned repairs; ensure correct OEM or approved aftermarket parts are used and manage return-authorized parts processes.
  • Maintain accurate, timely service records, repair orders, and electronic documentation in dealership or shop management systems to ensure traceability, billing accuracy, and service history completeness.
  • Conduct final quality checks and road tests after repair completion to verify repairs meet performance and safety standards and prepare vehicles for customer pickup with clear explanations of work performed.
  • Mentor and train junior technicians and apprentices on diagnostic techniques, safe tool use, and manufacturer-specific repair methods to build team capability and maintain service quality.
  • Adhere to health, safety, and environmental regulations in the workshop: proper disposal of fluids and hazardous materials, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and compliance with lockout/tagout and electrical safety protocols.
  • Participate in continuous learning and dealer/OEM training programs to stay current with new vehicle technologies, diagnostic procedures, and industry best practices.
  • Maintain shop tools, calibration equipment, and diagnostic devices in good working order; coordinate calibrations and repairs of shop equipment as necessary.
  • Handle emergency or after-hours service calls when scheduled, provide reasonable on-call support for fleet customers, and coordinate towing/roadside service as required by shop policy.
  • Work collaboratively with service advisors and parts personnel to estimate repair times, manage customer expectations, and provide transparent explanations of complex mechanical issues.
  • Improve shop productivity by recommending process improvements, keeping accurate time entries, and minimizing comebacks through root-cause verification and effective repair planning.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in inventory control, parts receiving, and verification to reduce delays and ensure parts availability for scheduled repairs.
  • Support warranty and administrative tasks such as preparing warranty submittals, tracking approvals, and following up on parts return authorizations.
  • Contribute to shop safety programs by conducting toolbox talks, safety audits, and assisting with training on hazardous waste handling and PPE procedures.
  • Participate in lean initiatives or continuous improvement projects to streamline repair flow, reduce cycle time, and lower operating costs.
  • Help coordinate vehicle recalls and technical service bulletin (TSB) campaigns by identifying affected VINs and applying required repairs or updates.
  • Provide technical input for service pricing, repair time estimates, and special tool or diagnostic equipment needs.
  • Assist service advisors at customer check-in or vehicle handover to explain technical concerns and walk customers through maintenance recommendations.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas, common shop spaces, and tool cribs to support shop efficiency and professional presentation.
  • Support specialty projects such as fleet conversions, accessory installations, or specialty retrofits (tow packages, auxiliary lighting, performance upgrades).
  • Participate in community outreach or shop promotional events as a technical representative to demonstrate professionalism and build customer trust.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • ASE Certification (A1–A8) or equivalent state licensing with demonstrated experience in diagnostics and repairs.
  • Proficient use of OEM diagnostic tools and software (Ford IDS, GM GDS2, Toyota Techstream, VW/Audi ODIS, etc.) and generic scan tools for fault code reading, live data interpretation, and module programming.
  • Strong mechanical skills: engine overhaul/repair, transmission service, clutch replacement, and drivetrain repairs including torque specification compliance.
  • Advanced electrical diagnostics: use of multimeter, oscilloscope, wiring schematics, CAN bus troubleshooting, PCM/module replacement, and shorts/opens diagnosis.
  • ADAS calibration and sensor alignment experience, including static and dynamic calibration procedures and pre/post calibration verifications.
  • HVAC diagnostics and EPA 609 refrigerant handling certification for A/C system service and refrigerant recovery/recharge.
  • High-voltage and hybrid vehicle safety certification (where applicable) and knowledge of HV system isolation, testing, and safety protocols.
  • Brakes, steering, and suspension repair competence with ability to perform alignments, inspect components to OEM tolerances, and diagnose NVH (noise/vibration/harshness) issues.
  • Transmission diagnostic capability: solenoid testing, valve body inspection, mechatronics, clutch pack replacement, and fluid exchange procedures.
  • Emissions systems diagnostics: O2 sensor testing, catalytic converter inspection, EVAP system leak detection, and readiness monitor troubleshooting.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required; vocational/technical training in Automotive Technology preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree or diploma in Automotive Technology, Automotive Service Technology, or equivalent from an accredited technical school.
  • OEM-specific training courses and manufacturer certifications (dealer training, hybrid/EV training).
