Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret and accurately dispense optical prescriptions from Optometrists and Ophthalmologists, ensuring all specifications are met with precision.
  • Guide patients through the frame selection process, providing expert advice on styles, materials, and fit that complement their facial features, lifestyle, and prescription needs.
  • Take and record precise patient measurements, including pupillary distance (PD), optical center (OC), segment height, and vertex distance, using both manual and digital tools.
  • Educate patients on the features and benefits of various lens designs, materials (e.g., polycarbonate, Trivex, high-index), and advanced lens coatings (e.g., anti-reflective, blue light filtering, photochromic).
  • Expertly fit and adjust eyeglasses and frames, troubleshooting and resolving issues related to comfort, visual acuity, and proper alignment to ensure an optimal patient experience.
  • Utilize a lensometer to neutralize and verify the accuracy of incoming prescription lenses from the lab, ensuring they meet strict ANSI Z80.1 standards.
  • Skillfully perform a wide range of frame repairs and adjustments, including hinge replacements, nose pad replacements, and frame straightening.
  • Process and submit patient eyewear orders to various optical laboratories, ensuring all details are communicated clearly and accurately for successful fabrication.
  • Conduct final inspections on all completed eyewear, verifying prescription accuracy, lens mounting, and overall quality before dispensing to the patient.
  • Troubleshoot and compassionately resolve any patient concerns or issues regarding their eyewear, demonstrating excellent problem-solving skills and a commitment to satisfaction.
  • Provide comprehensive patient education on the proper care, cleaning, and maintenance of their new eyeglasses to ensure longevity and performance.
  • Perform pre-screening and diagnostic testing for patients as needed, including auto-refraction, non-contact tonometry (NCT), and visual field testing.
  • Achieve and exceed established sales goals and key performance indicators (KPIs) through a patient-centric, needs-based approach.
  • Maintain a deep and current knowledge of the latest trends in eyewear fashion, lens technology, and advancements in the optical industry.
  • Provide clear and concise instruction to new contact lens wearers on proper insertion, removal, hygiene, and care techniques.

Secondary Functions

  • Manage and maintain the optical dispensary's inventory of frames, lenses, and contact lenses, including ordering, receiving, and tracking stock.
  • Assist with verifying patient insurance eligibility and explaining vision plan benefits, co-pays, and out-of-pocket costs in a clear, understandable manner.
  • Operate and maintain in-office finishing lab equipment for tasks such as lens edging, tinting, and mounting, if applicable.
  • Train, mentor, and support apprentice opticians and optical assistants to foster their professional growth and ensure consistent service standards.
  • Collaborate closely with the practice's Optometrists and clinical staff to ensure a seamless and integrated patient care journey.
  • Maintain a clean, professional, and inviting dispensary environment that reflects our commitment to quality and excellence.
  • Uphold all HIPAA regulations by diligently maintaining the confidentiality and security of patient records and personal health information.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • State Optician Licensure: Must hold a current and valid Optician's license in the state of practice.
  • Lensometry: Proficiency in using manual and/or automated lensometers to verify prescription accuracy.
  • Dispensing & Fitting: Expertise in taking precise optical measurements and performing complex frame adjustments and repairs.
  • Product Knowledge: Deep understanding of lens materials, designs, coatings, and frame materials.
  • ANSI Standards: Thorough knowledge of ANSI Z80.1 tolerance standards for prescription eyewear.
  • Optical Equipment: Experience with optical tools such as pupillometers, frame heaters, and adjustment pliers.
  • EHR/POS Systems: Familiarity with Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Point-of-Sale (POS) software used in optical settings.
  • Insurance Billing: Basic knowledge of vision insurance plans and billing procedures.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • A current and valid state-issued Dispensing Optician License.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree in Ophthalmic Dispensing or Vision Care Technology.
  • American Board of Opticianry (ABO) and/or National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) certification.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5+ years of hands-on experience working as a Licensed Optician in a retail or private practice setting.

Preferred: Experience in a high-volume optical dispensary and a proven track record of meeting or exceeding sales and patient satisfaction targets. Experience with both adult and pediatric patients is a strong plus.
