Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute comprehensive diagnostic procedures on all vehicle systems using both computerized tools and hands-on methods to accurately identify the root cause of malfunctions and customer concerns.
  • Perform complex repairs on major vehicle components, including engines, transmissions, differentials, and transfer cases, adhering strictly to manufacturer specifications.
  • Conduct thorough vehicle inspections, such as multi-point inspections and provincial/state safety certifications, documenting all findings and recommending necessary services.
  • Service and repair advanced vehicle systems, including electrical, electronic, steering, suspension, braking, and climate control systems.
  • Address complex drivability issues, diagnosing and resolving problems related to engine performance, fuel systems, and emissions control.
  • Mount, balance, and rotate tires, and perform precision four-wheel alignments to ensure optimal vehicle handling and tire longevity.
  • Complete all repair and maintenance tasks efficiently and correctly on the first attempt to enhance customer satisfaction and workshop productivity.
  • Interpret and utilize technical bulletins, service manuals, and wiring diagrams to effectively troubleshoot and complete repairs on a wide range of vehicle makes and models.
  • Road-test vehicles before and after service to verify customer complaints, confirm repair effectiveness, and ensure the vehicle operates to manufacturer standards.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of all work performed, parts used, and time spent on each vehicle using the designated shop management system.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance services, such as oil changes, fluid flushes, and filter replacements, in accordance with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) guidelines.
  • Diagnose and repair sophisticated hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) systems, including high-voltage batteries, electric motors, and regenerative braking systems.
  • Communicate technical findings and repair recommendations clearly and effectively to Service Advisors to ensure customers are well-informed.
  • Utilize specialized equipment for tasks such as fuel injector cleaning, air conditioning system recharging, and brake lathe operations.
  • Handle and dispose of hazardous materials and workshop waste in compliance with all environmental and safety regulations.

Secondary Functions

  • Mentor and provide guidance to apprentice technicians, sharing knowledge and best practices to support their professional development.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, ensuring all tools and equipment are properly stored and in good working order.
  • Participate in ongoing factory-sponsored and third-party training to stay current with the latest automotive technologies, tools, and repair techniques.
  • Assist the service team in quality control checks, reviewing the work of other technicians to ensure it meets the highest standards.
  • Collaborate with the parts department to ensure the correct parts are sourced and available for repair jobs, minimizing vehicle downtime.
  • Contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment, actively participating in team meetings and process improvement initiatives.

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Diagnostics: Proficiency in using OEM and aftermarket scan tools, lab scopes, and other diagnostic equipment to pinpoint faults in complex vehicle systems.
  • Engine Repair & Performance: In-depth knowledge of internal combustion engine mechanics, fuel injection systems, and emission control technologies.
  • Electrical & Electronic Systems: Strong ability to read wiring diagrams and troubleshoot complex circuits, sensors, and computer control modules.
  • Brake and Suspension Systems: Expertise in servicing and repairing hydraulic brake systems (including ABS/TCS), steering components, and advanced suspension technologies.
  • Drivetrain Expertise: Comprehensive understanding of automatic and manual transmissions, differentials, and 4WD/AWD systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • A valid, provincially or state-issued Automotive Service Technician License (e.g., Red Seal 310S in Canada, ASE Master Certification in the U.S.).

Preferred Education:

  • Post-secondary diploma or certificate from a recognized Automotive Technology or Motive Power Technician program.
  • Manufacturer-specific training certifications (e.g., Ford ASSET, GM ASEP, Toyota T-TEN).

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-10+ years of hands-on experience as a licensed technician in a dealership or independent repair facility.
