Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop comprehensive and innovative lighting design concepts from initial schematic phase through construction administration, ensuring alignment with architectural vision.
  • Produce detailed lighting layouts, fixture schedules, and control intent drawings using industry-standard software like AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Perform complex photometric calculations and simulations using AGI32 or DIALux to validate design performance and ensure compliance with light level requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with architects, interior designers, electrical engineers, and clients to seamlessly integrate lighting solutions into the overall building design.
  • Create and deliver compelling client presentations, utilizing renderings, physical mock-ups, and mood boards to effectively communicate design concepts and intent.
  • Select and specify appropriate luminaires, lamps, drivers, and control systems based on aesthetic goals, performance criteria, budget, and energy efficiency.
  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables, ensuring all design milestones are met on schedule and within financial constraints.
  • Conduct on-site visits to review installation progress, assist with contractor questions, and perform final aiming, focusing, and commissioning of the lighting system.
  • Stay current with the latest lighting technologies, including LED advancements, smart controls, and sustainable design practices to bring cutting-edge solutions to projects.
  • Review and respond to contractor submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs), and change orders during the construction phase to maintain design integrity.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and thorough project documentation, including fixture schedules, cut sheets, and control system riser diagrams.
  • Develop custom luminaire details and unique lighting solutions for specific project conditions in collaboration with manufacturers and fabricators.
  • Ensure all lighting designs comply with relevant energy codes (e.g., ASHRAE/IES 90.1, Title 24, IECC) and accessibility standards.

Secondary Functions

  • Lead and mentor junior designers, providing constructive feedback, technical guidance, and support to foster their professional growth.
  • Participate in client meetings and design workshops to gather project requirements, present design progress, and build strong, lasting professional relationships.
  • Coordinate the development of sophisticated lighting control strategies that enhance user experience, provide flexibility, and maximize energy savings.
  • Generate detailed cost estimates and explore value engineering options to align the lighting scope with the project budget without compromising design quality.
  • Assist in business development efforts by preparing compelling proposals, fee estimates, and qualifications packages for potential new projects.
  • Author detailed lighting design reports and narratives that clearly articulate the design intent, technical specifications, and operational guidelines.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the firm's design standards, project templates, and library of preferred lighting products and details.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Design Software Proficiency: Advanced skills in AutoCAD, Revit, and lighting calculation software such as AGI32 or DIALux.
  • Presentation Software: Competency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) for creating high-quality presentation materials and renderings.
  • Photometric Expertise: Deep understanding of photometric principles, light distribution, color theory, and light quality metrics (CRI, R9, TM-30).
  • Technical Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of luminaire types, lamp sources (especially LED), drivers, and modern lighting control systems (e.g., DALI, 0-10V, DMX, wireless).
  • Code Compliance: Strong familiarity with national and local energy and building codes, including ASHRAE, IECC, and California Title 24.
  • Hand Sketching: Ability to quickly convey lighting concepts and details through hand sketching and diagrams during collaborative design sessions.

Educational Background

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-7 years of progressive experience in an architectural lighting design firm or a multi-disciplinary engineering/architecture firm with a dedicated lighting studio.

Preferred:

  • A diverse portfolio of built projects across various market sectors such as hospitality, high-end retail, healthcare, corporate, and civic spaces is highly desirable.
  • Experience leading the lighting design on small to mid-sized projects from concept through to completion.
