The Line Lead is the frontline supervisor responsible for end-to-end execution of a production line during assigned shifts. This role directs and develops a team of operators, enforces safety and quality standards, meets daily production targets, reduces downtime, and continuously improves line performance. The Line Lead partners with Maintenance, Quality, Engineering, and Supply Chain to ensure on-time delivery, cost control, and customer satisfaction.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead a team of production operators on an assigned line or cell to meet daily and weekly production targets, ensuring output, quality and efficiency metrics are achieved while minimizing overtime and waste.
  • Conduct shift start-up and end-of-shift briefings, assign roles and tasks, communicate priorities and critical quality or safety alerts, and ensure smooth shift-to-shift handovers.
  • Monitor production performance using KPIs (OEE, throughput, scrap rates, yield) and generate timely shift reports for operations management; identify trends and implement corrective actions.
  • Enforce all safety, health and environmental policies on the line; perform regular safety observations, complete incident reports, and lead near-miss investigations to prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain product quality by enforcing adherence to SOPs, work instructions and inspection criteria; perform first-article checks and approve product release when required.
  • Troubleshoot routine equipment and process issues on the line, perform first-line mechanical and electrical adjustments within competency, and coordinate with Maintenance for complex repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Lead root cause analysis (5 Whys, Fishbone) for repeat defects or stoppages and implement countermeasures through corrective action plans and follow-up verification.
  • Execute line changeovers and product change preparations, optimize set-up times, and drive SMED (single minute exchange of dies) activities to improve production flexibility.
  • Train, mentor and certify operators on processes, machine operation, safety protocols and quality standards; maintain training records and competency matrices.
  • Balance labor and station workloads, adjust staffing and production pacing to meet demand while maintaining safety and quality; recommend temporary reassignments when needed.
  • Manage material flow for the line, ensure parts availability, coordinate with inventory and material handlers, and escalate shortages proactively to avoid production interruptions.
  • Implement and sustain 5S and housekeeping standards at the line level; conduct regular audits and drive continuous improvement of workplace organization.
  • Execute visual management boards for production status, quality alerts and safety metrics to keep the team aligned and accountable throughout the shift.
  • Participate in daily production meetings, Kaizen events and cross-functional problem solving with Engineering, Quality, and Supply Chain to deliver improvement projects and reduce costs.
  • Oversee and document non-conforming product handling, containment, rework or scrapping in accordance with Quality procedures and traceability requirements.
  • Coach team members on performance expectations, complete informal counseling and input to formal performance reviews; participate in hiring, discipline and termination processes when required.
  • Ensure production documentation, batch records and electronic logs are complete, accurate and compliant with internal and regulatory standards (e.g., GMP, ISO) where applicable.
  • Coordinate with supervisors and planners to manage unplanned absences, shift coverage and overtime, ensuring continuity of production while controlling labor costs.
  • Drive productivity improvement initiatives by identifying bottlenecks, recommending layout or tooling changes, and partnering with engineering to implement solutions that increase capacity.
  • Monitor energy, utility and consumable usage on the line and recommend opportunities to reduce cost and waste without impacting safety or quality.
  • Maintain confidentiality and data integrity for production metrics, quality incidents and personnel records; escalate sensitive issues to management in a timely manner.
  • Serve as the primary on-shift contact for customer or regulatory audits for the production line, preparing supporting documentation and leading audit responses as assigned.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations including lockout/tagout, confined space, PPE use, and hazard communication, and lead daily safety walkthroughs.
  • Use MES/ERP systems to log production, verify instructions and update inventory transactions; leverage system data to support continuous improvement and reporting.

Secondary Functions

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by collecting data, piloting process changes, and documenting project results for wider deployment.
  • Assist in cross-training programs and succession planning to build bench strength across the production workforce.
  • Participate in hiring interviews, onboarding and job shadow programs to select and assimilate new operators effectively.
  • Help plan and execute small capital projects and equipment upgrades by providing operator input and validating as-built procedures.
  • Act as liaison with suppliers and logistics when line issues are related to incoming materials or packaging to reduce repeat defects.
  • Prepare and present shift performance summaries, improvement suggestions and resource requests to Plant Management during review meetings.
  • Support internal and external audits by maintaining audit-ready production areas and records; implement audit findings and corrective actions.
  • Participate in cost reduction initiatives such as scrap reduction, yield improvements, and takt time optimization.
  • Provide weekend or off-shift support during special production runs, product launches or peak demand periods as required.
  • Maintain and update local work instructions, visual aids and quality checklists to reflect process changes and sustain standard work.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Production line supervision and shift leadership in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles: 5S, Kaizen, SMED, and value stream mapping.
  • Experience with quality systems and standards (GMP, ISO 9001, or industry-specific regs).
  • Root cause analysis and corrective action methodologies (5 Whys, Fishbone, PDCA).
  • Familiarity with MES, ERP (e.g., SAP, Oracle), and PLC basics for data reading and alarms.
  • Proficiency in production metrics and OEE analysis to drive performance improvements.
  • Hands-on experience with changeovers, machine setup, tooling and fixture adjustments.
  • Ability to read and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions and batch records.
  • Competence in Microsoft Excel for reporting (pivot tables, VLOOKUP), and common production reporting tools.
  • Experience managing inventory flow, kanban systems, and material handling best practices.
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical and electrical troubleshooting and preventive maintenance practices.
  • Experience performing quality inspections, first article checks and non-conformance management.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED (required)

Preferred Education:

  • Associate Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Operations Management or related field (preferred)
