Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive legal research on complex procedural and substantive issues using online legal research platforms such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, and Bloomberg Law.
  • Draft a wide array of legal documents under attorney supervision, including initial pleadings, discovery requests and responses, motions, subpoenas, and legal memoranda.
  • Assist in all facets of the discovery process, including the preparation of interrogatories, requests for production of documents, and requests for admissions.
  • Manage and organize voluminous case files, evidence, and discovery documents, utilizing case management and eDiscovery software like Relativity, Clio, or Concordance.
  • Prepare detailed summaries of depositions, hearing transcripts, and other legal proceedings to assist attorneys in case analysis and strategy development.
  • Assist attorneys with trial preparation, including the organization of trial binders, management of exhibit lists, and coordination of witness schedules.
  • Cite-check, proofread, and format legal briefs, motions, and other court submissions to ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal court rules.
  • Prepare and manage exhibits for depositions, hearings, and trials, ensuring they are properly marked, organized, and presented.
  • Investigate the factual background of cases by gathering documents, interviewing clients and witnesses, and researching publicly available information.
  • Maintain the case calendar by tracking and docketing all court-ordered deadlines, filing dates, and other key litigation events.
  • Facilitate the electronic filing (e-filing) of legal documents with various state and federal courts through systems like PACER, CM/ECF, and state-specific portals.
  • Communicate professionally with clients, opposing counsel, court personnel, and vendors to gather information and coordinate logistical matters.
  • Support attorneys during court proceedings, hearings, depositions, and client meetings by taking notes and managing documents.
  • Analyze and synthesize complex legal and factual information into clear, concise summaries and reports for the legal team.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain and organize both physical and electronic case files in strict accordance with firm protocols and best practices for document management.
  • Provide general administrative support to the litigation team, which may include scheduling depositions, meetings, and managing attorney calendars.
  • Coordinate with third-party vendors for services such as court reporting, document copying/scanning, and trial graphics.
  • Assist in the preparation of materials for client meetings, including status reports, document summaries, and presentations.
  • Monitor relevant legal developments, court decisions, and changes in procedural rules that could impact active cases.
  • Help maintain the firm's legal research databases, internal knowledge banks, and template libraries.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Legal Research: High proficiency with legal research platforms like Westlaw, LexisNexis, and other legal databases to efficiently find relevant statutes, case law, and regulations.
  • Legal Writing & Drafting: Ability to draft clear, concise, and persuasive legal documents, from correspondence to initial pleadings and motions.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • A Bachelor's Degree and a Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-approved program, OR
  • Actively enrolled and in good standing at an ABA-accredited law school as a Juris Doctor (J.D.) candidate.

Preferred Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0 - 3 years. This role is well-suited for individuals at the beginning of their legal careers.
