Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Skillfully and safely operate various types of front-end loaders (wheel loaders, track loaders) to move, transport, and stage materials such as soil, gravel, sand, asphalt, and other raw materials.
- Efficiently load materials into haul trucks, rail cars, and processing equipment, ensuring proper weight distribution and adherence to load limits to prevent spillage and ensure transport safety.
- Conduct thorough pre-operational and post-operational inspections of the loader, checking fluid levels, tire pressure, lights, and hydraulic systems, and accurately complete daily equipment logs.
- Proactively identify and report any mechanical issues, malfunctions, or necessary repairs to the maintenance team to minimize downtime and ensure equipment longevity.
- Meticulously maintain and manage stockpiles of various materials, ensuring proper separation, organization, and stability to prevent cross-contamination and facilitate easy access.
- Operate the loader with a high degree of precision to grade and level surfaces, build ramps, and prepare work areas as required for specific project phases.
- Strictly adhere to all company, state, and federal safety regulations, including OSHA and/or MSHA guidelines, to foster a zero-incident work environment.
- Utilize on-board scales and computer systems to accurately weigh and track the amount of material loaded, ensuring compliance with customer orders and inventory records.
- Communicate effectively with truck drivers, plant personnel, and supervisors via two-way radio or hand signals to coordinate loading activities and ensure a smooth operational flow.
- Continuously monitor the work area for potential hazards, including pedestrians, other equipment, and changing ground conditions, and adjust operations accordingly.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance, such as greasing fittings, cleaning air filters, and maintaining cab cleanliness, to keep the equipment in optimal operating condition.
- Assist in the production process by feeding materials into hoppers, crushers, or conveyor systems at a consistent and controlled rate.
- Understand and interpret grade stakes, site plans, and other indicators to perform tasks according to project specifications.
- Operate equipment in a fuel-efficient manner to help control operational costs and reduce environmental impact.
- Participate actively in daily safety meetings, "toolbox talks," and site inspections, contributing to a proactive safety culture.
- Work collaboratively with other equipment operators and ground personnel to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and in the correct sequence.
- Manage the dumping of materials from incoming trucks, directing them to the appropriate stockpile locations.
- Utilize the loader's attachments (e.g., forks, buckets, brooms) to perform a variety of tasks beyond simple material moving.
- Maintain a clean and safe worksite by using the loader to clear debris, consolidate waste, and manage laydown yards.
- Respond to changing production needs and priorities, demonstrating flexibility to switch tasks and operate different pieces of equipment as qualified and required.
Secondary Functions
- Assist with general site maintenance and housekeeping duties during operational downtime or as directed by a supervisor.
- Provide operational support and guidance to less experienced operators or trainees to enhance team skill levels.
- Participate in the development of Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) for tasks involving loader operation.
- Support inventory management efforts by providing accurate stockpile measurements and material counts.
