Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Respond to residential, commercial, industrial and automotive lockout calls, arriving on-site promptly, assessing the situation, and safely gaining entry with minimal damage while documenting the incident.
  • Cut, duplicate and program mechanical and electronic keys, including cylinder keys, high-security keys, dimple keys, and modern laser-cut/transponder keys using professional key cutting machines and laser key cutters.
  • Rekey and master-key lock systems: disassemble locks, change pinning and cylinder configurations, and design master key systems that meet client security and operational requirements.
  • Install, repair and replace mechanical locks, deadbolts, mortise locks, panic hardware, exit devices and door closers for residential and commercial doors, ensuring correct alignment and code compliance.
  • Install, configure and troubleshoot electronic access control systems including keypads, card readers, RFID systems, smart locks, electric strikes, magnetic locks and integrated entry systems.
  • Diagnose, repair and replace ignition cylinders, door lock actuators and other vehicle locking components; program and synchronize new transponder keys, remote fobs and proximity keys with vehicle immobilizer systems.
  • Open and service safes and vaults using non-destructive entry techniques where possible; diagnose safe lock faults, replace safe locks and install combination changes and electronic safe controllers.
  • Perform on-site security assessments and provide professional recommendations for lock upgrades, master key design, access control integration and overall site hardening to mitigate unauthorized entry.
  • Fabricate and install custom keyways, restricted key systems and specialty lock hardware for commercial and institutional clients in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications.
  • Maintain and operate a fully equipped service vehicle containing key cutting machines, an inventory of common locksets, cylinders, hardware, and electronic access components to perform efficient mobile service.
  • Provide accurate written estimates, quotes and invoices for parts and labor; explain scope of work, warranty, and maintenance recommendations to customers in clear, professional language.
  • Maintain accurate job records, service tickets and inventory logs via company software or mobile applications; track parts used and report recurring issues to shop management.
  • Coordinate with property managers, contractors and building maintenance teams to schedule installations, access control upgrades and commercial lock system overhauls with minimal disruption.
  • Follow all safety procedures, local building codes and ADA compliance requirements when installing door hardware and access devices; ensure proper fire exit hardware and signage are in place.
  • Support preventive maintenance programs by inspecting locks, lubricating mechanisms, replacing worn components, and recommending replacement schedules for high-traffic doors.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electronic lock failures, power supply issues, controller malfunctions and networked access devices; escalate complex electronic issues to senior technicians or manufacturer support when required.
  • Install and terminate door hardware, strike plates, multi-point locking systems and electro-mechanical components, ensuring proper alignment, clearances and operation across different door types and frames.
  • Train, mentor and supervise apprentices and junior locksmiths on best practices for safe entry techniques, lock disassembly/reassembly, key cutting, and customer service standards.
  • Maintain professional certifications, stay current with new lock technologies, manufacturer training and security industry best practices; attend periodic training and certification courses as required.
  • Manage emergency call rotations and on-call duties during nights and weekends; prioritize safety and response time while maintaining high-quality workmanship under pressure.
  • Source, stock and manage parts inventory, suggest procurement of specialty hardware when needed, and ensure secure storage of restricted key blanks and high-security components.
  • Provide sales support by demonstrating product features, explaining benefits of high-security and electronic systems, and assisting customers in selecting the right security solutions for their needs.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with light shop duties including key coding, inventory restocking, tool maintenance and shop cleanliness to keep the operation running smoothly.
  • Support sales and business development by preparing proposals, upselling extended warranties or service plans, and following up with clients to ensure satisfaction and referrals.
  • Collaborate with insurance adjusters or law enforcement when documenting incidents involving forced entry or criminal activity, ensuring accurate records and evidence chain where applicable.
  • Participate in team meetings, contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, and help update standard operating procedures for lock installation and maintenance.
  • Provide feedback to suppliers and manufacturers about product performance or frequent failure modes that affect field service reliability.
  • Help implement customer feedback loops for service quality improvement and contribute to online reputation management by encouraging satisfied clients to leave reviews.
  • Support workplace safety programs, participate in toolbox talks and report any hazardous conditions or incidents to management immediately.
  • Assist with basic electrical wiring tasks required for access control and electronic lock installations within the scope of company policy and local regulations.
  • Cross-train with allied trades (glass/door installers, carpentry) to coordinate complex door hardware retrofits and minimize callbacks.
  • Maintain a professional appearance, customer-facing demeanor, and clear communication when representing the company in homes, businesses and public facilities.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient in key cutting and duplication using manual and automatic key cutting machines, laser key-cutters, and code cutting techniques.
  • Skilled in lock disassembly, rekeying, cylinder pinning, and master key system design for residential, commercial and institutional environments.
  • Experience programming vehicle transponder keys, smart keys and remote key fobs using OBD or manufacturer-specific programming tools and equipment.
  • Knowledgeable in installing, configuring, and troubleshooting electronic access control systems, RFID readers, keypads, and smart lock integration.
  • Competent in safe and vault opening procedures, safe repair techniques, combination changes, and safe lock replacement.

  • Skilled with power and hand tools commonly used by locksmiths (drills, Dremel, punch sets, wedge tools) and adherence to non-destructive entry best practices.
  • Experience with mobile service management software, job ticketing apps, inventory systems and basic invoicing or POS systems.
  • Knowledge of building security standards, local code requirements and industry best practices for physical security installations.
  • Basic electrical wiring and low-voltage cabling experience related to access control and electronic lock installations.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; vocational training or trade school preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or diploma in locksmithing or security technology from an accredited trade school.
  • Manufacturer certifications (e.g., ASSA ABLOY, Mul-T-Lock, Ilco, ALOA certification) or completion of formal apprenticeship program.
