This role is primarily focused on minimizing financial losses resulting from theft, fraud, waste, and operational errors. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Actively patrol store premises, including sales floors and back-of-house areas, to detect and deter potential theft, vandalism, and other illicit activities.
  • Skillfully operate and monitor Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems and other surveillance equipment to identify suspicious behaviors and gather evidence for investigations.
  • Conduct thorough and legally compliant apprehensions of external theft suspects (shoplifters) in accordance with company policy and local statutes.
  • Lead or assist in comprehensive internal investigations into employee dishonesty, fraud, and policy violations, maintaining strict confidentiality throughout the process.
  • Perform structured interviews and interrogations with subjects and witnesses, utilizing established techniques (e.g., Wicklander-Zulawski) to obtain factual and accurate information.
  • Compile detailed, accurate, and professional incident reports and case files for all investigations, apprehensions, and significant security events.
  • Testify in legal proceedings, including criminal court and unemployment hearings, to represent the company's interests and present evidence effectively.
  • Conduct regular and unannounced audits of cash handling procedures, inventory controls, and operational compliance to identify vulnerabilities and ensure adherence to standards.
  • Analyze Point of Sale (POS) data, exception reports, and inventory records to identify trends and patterns indicative of potential theft or fraud.
  • Respond promptly to alarm activations and emergency situations, taking appropriate action to ensure the safety of all individuals and the security of the facility.
  • Foster a strong security-aware culture by training store associates on loss prevention policies, theft indicators, and proper safety procedures.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with local law enforcement agencies to facilitate cooperation on criminal cases and share relevant intelligence.

Secondary Functions

  • Conduct regular inspections of physical security measures, such as locks, alarms, and EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) systems, ensuring they are fully functional.
  • Review and advise on operational processes that may contribute to shrinkage, offering practical solutions for improvement.
  • Participate in store-level meetings to provide updates on loss prevention trends, initiatives, and recent incidents to the management team.
  • Manage and preserve evidence collected during investigations, ensuring the chain of custody is meticulously maintained for legal purposes.
  • Perform routine safety walks and hazard assessments to identify and mitigate risks that could lead to accidents or injuries.
  • Assist in the coordination and execution of the annual physical inventory process to ensure accuracy and identify sources of shrink.
  • Provide a visible and professional security presence during high-traffic periods, special events, or periods of elevated risk.
  • Support new store openings by assisting with the setup of security systems and training of the new team on loss prevention fundamentals.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CCTV & Surveillance Systems Operation: Proficiency in operating modern digital and analog camera systems, including playback, evidence retrieval, and covert camera placement.
  • Interview & Interrogation Techniques: Formal training and practical experience in conducting non-confrontational, fact-finding interviews.
  • Investigative Report Writing: The ability to write clear, concise, and legally defensible reports detailing the facts of an incident or investigation.
  • Knowledge of Criminal & Civil Law: A strong understanding of local and state laws pertaining to theft, detention, and citizens' arrest.
  • EAS Systems Knowledge: Familiarity with the operation, troubleshooting, and best practices for Electronic Article Surveillance tags and pedestals.

  • Physical Security Auditing: Ability to assess the effectiveness of physical security controls like alarms, locks, and access control systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 1-3 years of direct experience in a loss prevention, asset protection, retail security, or a closely related field (e.g., law enforcement, military police).

Preferred:

  • Prior experience successfully apprehending shoplifters and conducting internal theft investigations is highly desirable. Certification in a recognized interview and interrogation technique (e.g., CFI, Wicklander-Zulawski) is a significant asset.
