Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct thorough investigations into incidents of theft, fraud, organized retail crime (ORC), and internal policy violations by interviewing witnesses, interviewing suspects when appropriate, preserving evidence, and preparing detailed written incident reports for management and legal follow-up.
- Monitor store premises and parking lots using CCTV, body-worn cameras, and covert observation to detect suspicious behavior, record video evidence, and escalate incidents for immediate response or arrest when necessary.
- Execute POS exception and transaction analysis to identify patterns of fraudulent returns, voids, discounts, or suspicious transactions and collaborate with management to remediate procedural gaps and reduce shrink.
- Apprehend non-compliant individuals within legal and company guidelines; coordinate safe detainment, document observations, and transfer custody to law enforcement as required while minimizing risk to team members and customers.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with local law enforcement, prosecutors, and community stakeholders to enable timely filing of charges, evidence transfer, and successful prosecution of criminal activity when appropriate.
- Perform regular physical security inspections of the store, including locks, doors, alarms, lighting, inventory displays, and high-value item cases; report and remediate vulnerabilities to prevent future loss.

- Maintain chain-of-custody for seized items and evidence, labeling and storing video and physical evidence per company policy to ensure admissibility in legal or internal proceedings.
- Prepare and present clear, concise written reports and case files using the company’s LP case management system, including incident summaries, witness statements, photo/video attachments, and recommended corrective actions.
- Execute targeted loss prevention initiatives, such as high-theft item placements, EAS (electronic article surveillance) tagging, and controlled merchandise display changes to reduce theft opportunities.
- Conduct daily and weekly inventory audits, cycle counts, and markdown verification for high-risk categories, then work with merchandising and operations to close variance gaps and correct planogram compliance issues.
- Participate in store opening and closing security procedures, ensuring doors, alarms, safes, and access points are secured and documented during shift changeovers.
- Provide associate training and coaching on theft prevention techniques, refund/return policies, and safety protocols to create a culture of loss awareness and consistent adherence to protective practices.
- Respond to emergency incidents—medical, fire, or security—following established emergency response plans, administer basic first aid or CPR as trained, and coordinate with emergency services.
- Support organized retail crime (ORC) investigations by identifying networks, analyzing patterns across multiple stores, compiling cross-store case bundles, and collaborating with multi-jurisdictional task forces.
- Execute undercover operations and sting operations when required, coordinating with legal and investigative teams to collect admissible evidence and identifying internal collusion or employee theft.
- Manage and maintain loss prevention tools and technology, such as EAS gates, CCTV systems, access control panels, and portable radios, including routine checks and reporting of outages and damages.
- Enforce safety and compliance policies including OSHA, local health and safety standards, and corporate guidelines by conducting safety inspections, documenting hazards, and working with store leadership on corrective actions.
- Assist in civil demand and restitution processes by documenting financial impacts of incidents, preparing claim packets, collaborating with counsel, and supporting follow-through on civil recovery actions.
- Track and analyze shrink data and KPIs (e.g., shortage per transaction, ORC incidents, exception rates), prepare actionable dashboards or reports, and recommend process improvements to reduce loss and improve profitability.
- Support audit and compliance activity during internal and external audits by preparing documentation, providing witness testimony, and implementing corrective action plans as directed.
