Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Install, route, and dress low voltage communication cables, including Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, and both single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cables, through conduits, walls, and ceiling spaces according to job specifications and industry best practices.
- Terminate and test various forms of copper and fiber optic cabling, including RJ45 connectors, keystone jacks, patch panels, and fusion or mechanical splicing of fiber, ensuring optimal performance and signal integrity.
- Mount, install, and connect a diverse range of low voltage hardware, such as surveillance cameras (IP and analog), access control panels, card readers, magnetic locks, electric strikes, and motion sensors.
- Build out and configure telecommunications closets and data rooms, including the installation of server racks, cabinets, ladder racks, cable trays, and patch panels, ensuring a clean and organized final product.
- Install and configure audio/visual (A/V) systems, including projectors, screens, commercial displays, speakers, microphones, and control systems in environments like conference rooms and auditoriums.
- Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and technical schematics to determine project requirements, cable pathways, and device locations for a successful installation.
- Perform comprehensive testing and certification of newly installed cable infrastructure using advanced testing equipment (e.g., Fluke Networks testers) to verify compliance with TIA/EIA and BICSI standards.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair faults in existing low voltage systems, methodically identifying issues with cabling, connections, or devices to restore functionality.
- Program and configure basic to intermediate functions on security and access control systems, including adding users, setting schedules, and ensuring proper device communication.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, including OSHA guidelines and site-specific safety rules, and maintain a safe and clean work environment at all times.
- Interface directly with clients and other trade professionals on-site to provide status updates, coordinate work, and ensure project milestones are met in a professional manner.
- Document all installation and service activities by completing detailed work orders, as-built drawings, test results, and daily reports in a timely and accurate fashion.
- Manage on-site inventory of materials, tools, and equipment, ensuring that all necessary components are available for the day's tasks and that company assets are properly maintained.
- Install and configure wireless access points (WAPs) and other network devices, ensuring proper placement for optimal coverage and performance.
- Perform system commissioning and verification to ensure all installed components function together as a complete system according to design specifications and client expectations.
- Install various components of fire alarm systems, including pull stations, smoke detectors, and notification appliances, under the guidance of a lead fire technician or project manager.
- Terminate and connect head-end equipment for various systems, making all necessary connections within control panels and equipment racks.
- Use a variety of hand and power tools safely and effectively, from basic screwdrivers and drills to specialized tools for cable termination and testing.
- Provide exceptional customer service during service calls, clearly explaining the nature of the problem and the steps taken to resolve it.
- Participate in on-call rotations for emergency service requests, responding to system failures outside of normal business hours when required.
Secondary Functions
- Assist project managers with conducting site surveys to gather information for accurate project estimates and design plans.
- Provide basic end-user training on the operation of newly installed systems, such as how to use an access card or operate a conference room A/V system.
