Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely load and unload passenger baggage, air cargo, and company mail onto and off aircraft, adhering to specific loading plans and weight distribution requirements.
- Efficiently operate various types of ground service equipment (GSE), including belt loaders, baggage tugs, pushback tractors, and container loaders, after completing required training and certification.
- Execute the precise marshalling of aircraft during arrival and departure sequences, using standardized international hand signals to guide flight crews safely to and from the gate.
- Perform aircraft pushback and towing procedures, connecting and disconnecting the tow bar and communicating directly with the flight deck to ensure safe movement of the aircraft.
- Sort and route passenger baggage to its correct destination, meticulously reading and interpreting baggage tags and conveyor system information to prevent mishandling.
- Strictly adhere to all federal, airport, and airline safety and security regulations, including the mandatory use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Conduct thorough aircraft walk-around inspections upon arrival and before departure to identify and report any visible damage or anomalies to the appropriate personnel.
- Perform aircraft de-icing and anti-icing operations during inclement winter weather, applying fluids according to precise specifications to ensure flight safety.
- Maintain clear and professional communication with pilots, gate agents, and fellow ground crew members via two-way radios to coordinate and streamline turnaround activities.
- Ensure the ramp area, baggage facilities, and equipment parking zones are kept clean, organized, and free of Foreign Object Debris (FOD) to prevent potential damage to aircraft.
- Handle specialized cargo, including fragile items, high-value goods, live animals (AVI), and dangerous goods, in strict accordance with established airline and international protocols.
- Verify baggage and passenger counts with gate agents and flight crews to ensure accuracy and compliance with flight manifests before departure.
- Safely operate and position passenger loading bridges (jet bridges) to connect the terminal gate with the aircraft door, ensuring a secure passage for customers.
- Service aircraft lavatory and potable water systems, connecting hoses and operating service trucks to empty waste tanks and replenish fresh water supplies.
- Demonstrate the ability to work outdoors in a physically demanding, fast-paced environment, consistently exposed to a wide range of weather conditions and high noise levels.
- Systematically lift, carry, and maneuver baggage and cargo, frequently weighing up to 70 pounds (32 kg), from carts to conveyor belts and into aircraft cargo holds.
- Position safety chocks and cones around the aircraft upon arrival and remove them prior to departure to ensure the aircraft remains secure at the gate.
- Connect and disconnect ground power units (GPU) and pre-conditioned air (PCA) hoses to the aircraft to provide power and climate control while at the gate.
- Document and report any incidents, including damage to baggage, equipment, or aircraft, through the proper channels using designated forms or software.
- Guide arriving aircraft to their designated parking positions, assisting with the connection of ground-based services and ensuring all initial safety measures are in place.
Secondary Functions
- Conduct routine pre-use inspections on all ground service equipment to ensure operational readiness, reporting any malfunctions or maintenance needs immediately.
- Participate actively in team briefings, safety meetings, and ongoing recurrent training programs to stay current with evolving procedures and regulations.
- Assist in the collection, containment, and disposal of Foreign Object Debris (FOD) from all airside operational areas.
- Maintain inventory and cleanliness of supplies in GSE and service vehicles, ensuring they are properly stocked for daily operations.
