Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate various sawmill machines such as debarkers, head saws, edgers, and trimmers to process logs and unfinished lumber into specified dimensions.
  • Manually handle, move, and sort lumber, cants, and boards at different stages of the production process.
  • Carefully stack and pile lumber according to grade, size, and species, ensuring stability and proper air circulation for drying or shipment.
  • Grade and mark lumber based on established quality standards, identifying defects like knots, splits, and warping.
  • Feed logs, cants, or boards into processing machinery, maintaining a steady and safe flow of materials to meet production targets.
  • Tail machines by removing processed wood, stacking it on carts or conveyors, and clearing away waste material.
  • Perform quality control checks on finished lumber to ensure it meets precise size, grade, and moisture content specifications.
  • Operate a forklift or other material handling equipment to transport logs, lumber bundles, and other materials throughout the yard and mill.
  • Band, wrap, and tag finished lumber packages for inventory and shipment, ensuring they are secure and correctly labeled.
  • Measure wood products using calipers, rules, and moisture meters to verify conformance to work orders and quality standards.
  • Optimize the cutting of logs and boards to maximize yield and minimize waste, making informed decisions based on wood characteristics.
  • Monitor the performance of production machinery during operation, listening for unusual noises and watching for signs of malfunction.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on equipment, including lubrication, cleaning, and blade changes, to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area by regularly sweeping sawdust, removing wood scraps, and properly disposing of waste materials to ensure a safe environment.
  • Strictly adhere to all company safety policies and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) protocols when clearing jams or performing maintenance.
  • Actively participate in safety meetings and training sessions, contributing to a culture of safety awareness and accident prevention.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, machine operators, and supervisors to coordinate workflow and report any production or safety issues.
  • Assist in conducting physical inventory counts of raw materials and finished goods.
  • Accurately complete production reports, quality logs, and other required documentation at the end of each shift.
  • Assist in training new team members on proper operational procedures, safety protocols, and quality expectations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Sawmill Equipment Operation: Ability to safely operate saws, planers, edgers, and debarking machinery.
  • Lumber Grading: Knowledge of wood species and the ability to identify defects to grade lumber according to industry standards.
  • Forklift Operation: Certified or able to be certified to operate forklifts and other heavy machinery for material handling.
  • Use of Hand and Power Tools: Proficiency with tools like chainsaws, tape measures, calipers, and maintenance tools.
  • Basic Machine Maintenance: Skill in performing routine cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs on mill equipment.
  • Reading Work Orders: Ability to interpret production schedules and work orders to meet manufacturing specifications.

  • Safety Consciousness: A constant and vigilant awareness of surroundings and commitment to following all safety protocols without exception.
  • Physical Stamina & Strength: Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy objects (often 50+ lbs), and perform repetitive tasks in various weather conditions.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-3 years of experience in a general labor, manufacturing, construction, or agricultural role.
