Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Receive, unload and stage incoming freight from tractor-trailers, box trucks, and container shipments by physically removing goods, breaking down pallets, and organizing items by SKU or receiving area while maintaining safe lifting techniques and proper use of PPE.
- Load outgoing shipments onto trucks and trailers, arranging pallets and cartons to maximize trailer space and secure freight to prevent shifting or damage during transit, following driver and carrier loading instructions.
- Inspect incoming and outgoing freight for damage, short-ships, mis-picks and discrepancies; document and report damages or variances immediately to receiving supervisors and complete required paperwork or electronic claims.
- Operate pallet jacks, hand trucks, dollies, and other non-powered material handling equipment safely to move pallets and cases between receiving docks, staging areas and storage locations.
- Perform systematic palletizing and depalletizing of mixed freight, ensuring correct orientation, weight distribution and shrink-wrap or banding as required by carrier or company standards.
- Use RF scanners, handheld barcode devices, or mobile tablets to scan cartons, confirm counts, and update WMS or receiving logs in real time; reconcile physical counts with manifest documentation.
- Communicate directly with drivers, dispatchers and yard personnel to verify manifests, sign receipts, clarify load contents and coordinate expedited or priority shipments.
- Follow strict cold storage and temperature-controlled handling procedures for perishable and frozen products, including appropriate PPE use, timing, and staging to maintain chain-of-custody and product integrity.
- Prioritize safety at the dock by following lockout/tagout, trailer restraint, wheel chock procedures and by attending mandatory safety briefings and tool-box talks.
- Stage and sequence pallets and cartons for downstream operations such as sorting, cross-docking, repalletizing, or line-side replenishment to maintain continuous throughput.
- Perform quality checks including carton count audits, label verification, and condition checks for expiration dates, batch/lot numbers, and seasonal assortment accuracy.
- Assist with ramping up and executing high-volume seasonal receiving events (e.g., holiday peaks), working extended shifts and flexible schedules to meet surge expectations.
- Coordinate with inventory control to support cycle counts and inventory reconciliations by providing transparent receipts and count data from dock activities.
- Prepare and maintain accurate unloading and loading documentation including bills of lading, proof-of-delivery attachments, weight tickets and carrier paperwork, ensuring signatures and time stamps are recorded correctly.
- Safely break down and dispose of freight packaging materials such as shrink wrap, banding, dunnage, and pallets in compliance with facility recycling and safety procedures.
- Support cross-docking operations by quickly transferring inbound loads directly to outbound trucks per routing instructions, reducing touches and improving same-day fulfillment metrics.
- Train and mentor temporary or new lumper team members on site-specific dock procedures, PPE requirements and safe material handling techniques to raise team productivity and reduce incidents.
- Execute damage containment procedures by segregating compromised product, photographing evidence, and routing items for inspection or return-to-vendor processing as required.
- Maintain dock area cleanliness and organization — sweeping, removing debris, securing loose items and ensuring dock plates, bumpers and lights are functional for continuous safe operations.
- Adhere to company attendance, punctuality and timekeeping standards to support on-time load/unload promises and reduce carrier detentions and penalties.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by reporting inefficiencies, proposing solutions for load sequencing and staging, and supporting pilot programs for new dock equipment or processes.
Secondary Functions
- Support cross-functional teams (receiving, shipping, inventory control) by providing ad-hoc load reports, pallet counts and photographic evidence to resolve discrepancies.
- Assist in basic inventory labeling, repacking of mixed case pallets, and consolidation of small shipments into full-case or full-pallet units for more efficient handling.
- Help maintain equipment condition by performing pre-use inspections of pallet jacks, strapping tools and hand trucks and reporting faults to maintenance.
- Facilitate courier and small parcel pickups by staging small packages in designated areas, verifying shipping labels, and assisting with carrier-specific check-in procedures.
- Participate in safety audits and corrective action plans, providing feedback on dock ergonomics and potential hazard mitigation.
- Support emergency response procedures at the dock, including spill containment, first-aid assistance and evacuation when necessary.
- Assist supervisors with shift change handovers including update logs, unresolved discrepancies and pending shipments to maintain continuity.
- Provide exceptional customer-facing service when interacting with carrier drivers, vendors and retail partners at the dock, representing the company professionally and courteously.
