  • Cut, shape, and install frets, fretwire, and bindings; perform precise fret dressing and re-fretting operations to ensure long-term playability and structural integrity.
  • Apply and control finishes (French polish, nitrocellulose lacquer, oil, shellac, polyurethanes) with expertise in surface preparation, grain filling, sanding, spraying and hand-polishing to meet aesthetic and acoustic goals.
  • Build, fit and adjust bridges, tailpieces, tuners, and other hardware components to specification and customer preference, including fabrication of custom parts when necessary.
  • Maintain and adjust neck geometry via shimming, heat-setting, and controlled re-cambering methods while documenting changes and assessing long-term stability.
  • Carve and shape headstocks, neck profiles and fingerboards to custom ergonomic specifications, integrating inlay, rosette work and fret markers as required.
  • Assemble and glue critical joints using hide glue, PVA and specialized adhesives following controlled drying, clamping and curing procedures to preserve instrument tone and longevity.
  • Select, evaluate and source tonewoods, veneers, and materials, balancing acoustical properties, sustainability considerations, and client budget constraints.
  • Tune instrument voicing by modifying bracing patterns, plate thicknesses and internal component geometry to achieve a desired tonal character and dynamic response.
  • Conduct quality assurance checks at multiple production stages, maintain build logs, and ensure instruments meet shop standards for playability, structural safety and finish consistency.
  • Provide on-site repair services and mobile setup appointments, diagnosing environmental or performance-related issues and recommending preventive care and maintenance schedules.
  • Educate customers and retail partners on proper instrument care, string selection, humidity control, and maintenance plans to extend instrument life and optimize sound.
  • Estimate repair costs and produce transparent, itemized quotes; manage invoicing, warranty documentation and customer sign-off procedures.
  • Train apprentices and junior technicians in workshop best practices, safety protocols, tool maintenance and standard procedures to cultivate technical craftsmanship within the team.
  • Operate and maintain specialized shop machinery (thickness planer, bandsaw, router tables, bending iron, spray booth) and hand tools, ensuring calibration and safety compliance.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe workshop environments adhering to health and safety regulations for dust control, chemical handling and proper storage of materials.
  • Collaborate with designers, musicians and sales teams to prototype new instrument models, provide material and design suggestions, and iterate based on field-testing feedback.
  • Support inventory control for parts, hardware, adhesives, finishes and consumables; coordinate with vendors for timely procurement to meet production schedules.
  • Document build processes and technical specifications for knowledge sharing and for enhancing SEO-rich product descriptions, blog posts, and technical pages used in marketing and e-commerce.

Secondary Functions

  • Respond to customer service inquiries and post-service follow-ups to ensure satisfaction and to capture testimonials and referral opportunities.
  • Participate in local music events, workshops, and industry trade shows to promote the shop’s custom builds and repair services and to network with musicians and retailers.
  • Contribute content for online knowledge bases, instructional videos, and social media demonstrating repair techniques, maintenance tips and behind-the-scenes shop processes to drive organic traffic and brand trust.
  • Perform light administrative tasks including scheduling appointments, updating work orders, and tracking lead times to improve shop throughput and customer communication.
  • Support warranty and aftercare requests by evaluating returned instruments, advising on next steps and coordinating appropriate corrective work or replacements.
  • Assist with pricing strategies and competitive market analyses for custom builds and restoration services to ensure profitability and align with target market positioning.
  • Mentor and evaluate apprentices through formal feedback cycles and hands-on training modules, documenting progress and recommending advancement when appropriate.
