Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conceptualize, sketch, and produce high-quality, original illustrations for a variety of editorial content, including cover stories, feature articles, department sections, and online features.
  • Collaborate extensively with the editorial and art direction teams to interpret written content and develop visual concepts that enhance and elevate the story.
  • Develop a unique and adaptable illustrative style that aligns with the magazine's brand identity while pushing creative boundaries to keep the visuals fresh and engaging.
  • Create compelling cover illustrations that are designed to grab attention on newsstands and digital platforms, effectively communicating the theme of the main feature.
  • Produce a range of illustration types, from full-page spreads and complex narrative scenes to smaller spot illustrations, icons, and character designs.
  • Translate complex data, statistics, and abstract concepts into clear, digestible, and visually appealing infographics and data visualizations.
  • Manage multiple illustration projects simultaneously, adhering to strict production schedules and deadlines without compromising artistic quality.
  • Participate in creative brainstorming meetings and concept development sessions, actively contributing ideas for the visual direction of upcoming issues.
  • Incorporate feedback from art directors and editors through multiple revision rounds, demonstrating flexibility and a collaborative spirit to achieve the best final product.
  • Prepare and deliver final artwork files according to specific pre-press and digital specifications, ensuring correct color profiles, resolution, and formatting for print and web.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of the magazine's target audience and content pillars to ensure all illustrations are relevant, appropriate, and resonant.
  • Research visual materials, historical references, and current trends to inform your illustrations and ensure accuracy and authenticity in your work.
  • Create custom lettering, typography, and headline treatments that integrate seamlessly with your illustrations and the overall page layout.
  • Develop and maintain a consistent visual language across a series of articles or within a specific section of the magazine.
  • Pitch proactive illustration ideas and visual story concepts to the editorial team that could be developed into future content.
  • Adapt illustrations for various digital formats, including social media posts, web banners, and email newsletters, ensuring they are optimized for each platform.
  • Work with the photo department to create composite images that blend photography and illustration for a unique and dynamic visual effect.
  • Stay current with the latest illustration techniques, software, and tools, continuously evolving your skills to bring innovative solutions to the team.
  • Archive and organize all final artwork and project files within the company's digital asset management system for future reference and reuse.
  • Attend press checks when required to ensure the printed color and quality of your illustrations meet brand standards and your artistic vision.
  • Create animated GIFs or short motion graphics from your illustrations for use on the magazine's website and social media channels.
  • Liaise with the legal department to ensure proper usage rights and licensing for all created and commissioned artwork.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Mastery of digital illustration software such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Procreate.
  • Strong traditional drawing, sketching, and composition skills that form the foundation of digital work.
  • Expert understanding of color theory, lighting, perspective, and visual storytelling.
  • Proficiency in typography and the ability to create custom, expressive lettering.
  • In-depth knowledge of print production processes and preparing files for CMYK printing.
