Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead end-to-end solution architecture for Magento 2 / Adobe Commerce projects, producing high-fidelity architecture diagrams, component breakdowns, deployment topologies, and non-functional requirement specifications (scalability, availability, performance, security).
  • Define and enforce Magento platform standards, coding guidelines, and extension/module evaluation criteria to reduce technical debt and ensure upgradeability and maintainability across multi-site deployments.
  • Architect and drive migrations from Magento 1 to Magento 2 / Adobe Commerce or from other platforms to Magento, including data migration strategy, database mapping, customizations reconciliation, and step-by-step cutover planning to minimize downtime and data loss.
  • Design and validate integration patterns for ERP, PIM, CRM, OMS, tax engines, and marketing automation systems; create API contracts, message flows (REST, GraphQL, async messaging), and error-handling/retry strategies for resilient integrations.
  • Specify and own search and catalog architecture using Elasticsearch / OpenSearch, including index design, query optimization, facet strategies, and catalog performance at scale for millions of SKUs and high-concurrency traffic.
  • Drive performance optimization and caching strategies (Varnish, Redis, Full Page Cache, CDN) with benchmarking plans, load testing scenarios, and tuning recommendations to achieve page load and conversion KPIs.
  • Architect headless/PWA storefronts and GraphQL APIs to enable multi-channel experiences — defining frontend-backend contracts, caching semantics, and SSR/CSR tradeoffs for SEO and speed.
  • Design cloud infrastructure and deployment patterns on AWS / Azure / GCP (or Adobe Commerce Cloud), recommending IaC (Terraform/CloudFormation), containerization (Docker), orchestration (Kubernetes), and autoscaling strategies for cost-efficient elasticity.
  • Define CI/CD pipelines, release orchestration, environment promotion practices, and automated testing strategies (unit, integration, acceptance) to reduce release risk and improve time-to-market.
  • Ensure platform security and compliance by specifying secure coding practices, secure deployments, vulnerability scanning, WAF/CDN policies, PCI-DSS readiness, SSO/OAuth approaches, and data protection mechanisms.
  • Lead architecture governance and solution reviews — perform technical due diligence for third-party modules, partners, and vendor proposals; provide RFP responses and technical assessments for procurement.
  • Produce cost estimates, TCO analyses, and capacity planning models for platform decisions (self-managed vs. Adobe Cloud vs. managed hosting) and present tradeoffs to stakeholders and leadership.
  • Create runbooks, incident management playbooks, and recovery plans; lead root cause analysis for production incidents and implement systemic fixes to prevent recurrence.
  • Drive observability and monitoring strategy: define key metrics, dashboards, tracing (APM), log aggregation, and alerting thresholds to proactively surface issues and track SLA/SLI targets.
  • Mentor and coach engineering teams on Magento best practices, architecture patterns, code reviews, and performance diagnostics to uplift the organization’s technical maturity.
  • Design multi-site, multi-currency, multi-locale strategies including store configuration, taxonomy, price and inventory modeling, and localization patterns to support global expansion.
  • Collaborate closely with product owners, UX, CRO, and marketing teams to translate business requirements into technical epics, ensuring solutions support personalization, promotions, and analytics instrumentation.
  • Oversee custom development scope, provide detailed technical specifications, and review complex module designs to ensure alignment with architectural vision and future upgrades.
  • Evaluate third-party SaaS integrations (payments, search, personalization, fraud, tax) and design hybrid architectures that balance SaaS time-to-value with custom on-premise or cloud components.
  • Lead proof-of-concepts (POCs) for new technologies (PWA frameworks, headless approaches, cloud-native services) and produce evaluation reports with recommendations and migration plans.
  • Own upgrade strategy and roadmap for Magento core updates, security patches, and ecosystem dependencies — cultivating a sustainable cadence for maintenance and innovation.
  • Define data strategy for commerce operations including master data management, product data flows (PIM), customer data privacy, and analytics event schemas to support reporting and experimentation.
  • Advise and support business development and pre-sales teams with technical architecture diagrams, pricing assumptions, and feasibility reviews for client proposals and solution commercials.
  • Build strong vendor relationships and run partner assessments, scope vendor-delivered components, and ensure SLAs and deliverables meet enterprise architectural and security standards.

Secondary Functions

  • Support cross-functional teams in production readiness reviews, feature toggling, and phased rollouts to minimize customer impact.
  • Assist in ad-hoc performance investigations and escalations; provide quick stabilization plans and medium-term remediation roadmaps.
  • Contribute to internal knowledge bases: standards, architecture decision records, runbooks, and “how-to” guides for onboarding new engineers and partners.
  • Collaborate with data & analytics teams to ensure event collection, commerce telemetry, and reporting pipelines correctly reflect customer and order life cycle events.
  • Provide architecture input during sprint planning and agile ceremonies; help decompose epics into scalable, testable technical stories.
