Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate hydraulic excavators (typically 20-50 ton class) with precision and expertise to excavate trenches for mainline sewer, water, and storm drain installations.
  • Interpret grade stakes, laser levels, and GPS machine control data to dig trenches to the precise depth, slope, and alignment required by engineering plans.
  • Excavate around existing underground utilities, such as gas lines and fiber optics, with extreme caution, often utilizing hydro-excavation or hand-digging techniques for verification.
  • Create and manage safe and efficient trench boxes and shoring systems in compliance with all OSHA regulations to prevent cave-ins and ensure crew safety.
  • Work in close collaboration with the pipe layer to safely and accurately set large-diameter pipes, manholes, and other utility structures into the trench.
  • Skillfully backfill and compact trenches in lifts, using appropriate techniques and materials to meet compaction standards and prevent future settlement.
  • Load dump trucks with excavated material efficiently and safely, managing the spoil pile and maintaining a clean and organized work area.
  • Perform daily pre-operation walk-around inspections of the equipment, checking fluid levels, tracks, hydraulic systems, and safety features, and documenting findings in a logbook.
  • Conduct minor preventative maintenance on the excavator, including greasing fittings, cleaning tracks, and replacing bucket teeth, to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of different soil types (e.g., clay, sand, rock) and adjust digging techniques accordingly to maintain trench wall stability and efficiency.
  • Cut and maintain stable slopes, benches, and swales according to project specifications, ensuring proper drainage and site grading.
  • Switch between various attachments, such as buckets of different sizes, hammers, and compactors, and operate them effectively for their intended purpose.
  • Communicate constantly with the ground crew, including the foreman, pipelayer, and spotters, using hand signals and radio communication to coordinate movements safely.
  • Identify and troubleshoot minor mechanical issues with the equipment and report significant problems to the site mechanic or supervisor promptly.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and site-specific safety policies, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and participating in daily safety briefings.
  • Maintain a high level of situational awareness, constantly monitoring the position of other workers, equipment, and potential hazards in the work environment.
  • Read and understand civil blueprints, cut sheets, and project specifications to visualize the final product and execute the work plan accurately.
  • Assist in the installation of dewatering systems, such as well points or sock drains, to manage groundwater in the excavation area.
  • Perform mass excavation and material moving for site preparation, including stripping topsoil and creating building pads or retention ponds.
  • Train and mentor less-experienced operators or laborers on the fundamentals of safe and efficient excavation practices.

  • Participate actively in daily "toolbox talks" and weekly safety meetings, contributing to a proactive safety culture on the job site.
  • Assist the crew with rigging, setting up laser equipment, or other manual tasks during equipment downtime or as needed to maintain project momentum.
  • Maintain a clean and organized equipment cab, ensuring all controls and monitors are unobstructed and in good working order.
  • Accurately complete daily timesheets and equipment logs detailing hours worked, tasks performed, and equipment condition.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Excavator Operation: Mastery of excavator controls for deep, precise digging, grading, and material handling, often in tight or congested areas.
  • GPS & Laser Guidance Systems: Proficiency in using Topcon, Trimble, or similar machine control systems to excavate accurately without constant manual staking.
  • Blueprint & Plan Reading: The ability to read, interpret, and apply information from civil engineering drawings, grade sheets, and survey markers.
  • Trench Safety & Shoring: In-depth knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P standards for excavation, including soil classification and the proper use of trench boxes, sloping, and benching.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Competency in performing daily checks and minor preventative maintenance to keep equipment in safe, operational condition.
  • Utility Location Awareness: Skill in identifying signs of and safely excavating around existing underground utilities.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction and/or Competent Person for Excavation certification.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of dedicated experience operating an excavator.
