Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of maintenance mechanics: assign daily work, set performance expectations, conduct regular coaching and development, and perform performance reviews to build a high-performing maintenance organization focused on safety and uptime.
  • Oversee and execute preventive maintenance (PM) and predictive maintenance (PdM) programs across mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems to maximize equipment reliability and lifecycle.
  • Direct troubleshooting and repair of complex mechanical and electrical failures, including motors, gearboxes, conveyors, pumps, compressors, HVAC systems, and automated production equipment.
  • Manage the CMMS workflow: create, prioritize, assign, and close work orders; enforce time and material tracking; maintain accurate asset history for reliability analysis and continuous improvement.
  • Supervise and perform PLC and control system troubleshooting and minor programming adjustments in coordination with controls engineers to minimize production interruptions.
  • Implement maintenance strategies for minimizing downtime—root cause analysis (5 Whys, RCA), corrective action plans, and verification of repairs to prevent repeat failures.
  • Develop and maintain spare parts inventory strategy and BOMs: forecast critical spares, control inventory levels, and coordinate purchasing to ensure parts availability while minimizing carrying costs.
  • Create daily and weekly shift schedules, coordinate on-call rotations, and ensure 24/7 coverage for critical plant systems while optimizing labor utilization and overtime.
  • Enforce and coach team on safety programs and regulatory compliance: Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, PPE requirements, OSHA standards, and facility-specific safety rules.
  • Lead and coordinate major planned maintenance outages and shutdowns, including scope definition, resource allocation, contractor management, and post-outage documentation and lessons learned.
  • Manage relationships and contracts with vendors and service providers for specialized repairs, calibration, and inspections; ensure vendor compliance with site safety and quality standards.
  • Drive continuous improvement and Lean initiatives (5S, Kaizen) within the maintenance group to reduce waste, improve response time, and increase first-time-fix rates.
  • Prepare, manage, and report on the maintenance area budget: labor, overtime, parts, and contracted services; identify cost-saving opportunities and justify capital expense requests.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, maintenance procedures, SOPs, electrical/mechanical prints, and change logs for audit readiness and knowledge retention.
  • Ensure calibration and preventative schedules for instrumentation and safety-critical devices are maintained and documented to comply with quality and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct skills assessments, identify training needs, and deliver hands-on technical training and cross-training to expand team capability and redundancy.
  • Coordinate machine installations, relocations, and modifications with engineering and production teams, ensuring mechanical integrity, alignment, and code compliance.
  • Implement predictive maintenance technologies (vibration analysis, thermal imaging, ultrasound) and partner with reliability teams to convert condition data into actionable work orders.
  • Monitor and report maintenance KPIs: mean time between failures (MTBF), mean time to repair (MTTR), preventive maintenance compliance, backlog, and cost per unit metrics; use data to drive decision-making.
  • Respond to emergency breakdowns and safety incidents: lead troubleshooting, containment, and rapid repair while documenting root causes and corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Enforce high standards of housekeeping and environmental controls in mechanical rooms and maintenance shops, including hazardous materials handling and disposal.
  • Participate in product changeovers and new product introductions to ensure equipment readiness, minimizing ramp-up issues and quality losses.

Secondary Functions

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proven hands-on expertise in mechanical systems (bearings, gearboxes, couplings, belts, chain drives, alignment, precision machining).
  • Electrical troubleshooting skills up to 480V: motor starters, contactors, overloads, motor control centers (MCC), and distribution panels.
  • PLC and control system troubleshooting experience (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Rockwell or similar), including ladder logic interpretation.
  • Experience with pneumatics, hydraulics, valves, and fluid power systems—diagnosis and component replacement.
  • Proficiency with CMMS platforms (e.g., IBM Maximo, SAP PM, eMaint, Fiix) for work order management and asset history tracking.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with technical/trade certification (industrial maintenance, electrical, mechanical) or equivalent military experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's degree in Industrial Maintenance Technology, Electrical Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field.
  • Certifications such as Certified Maintenance & Reliability Technician (CMRT), NFPA 70E, OSHA 10/30, or HVAC certifications are a plus.
