Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret and work from complex blueprints, engineering drawings, schematics, and technical work instructions to perform installation and outfitting tasks.
  • Execute the precise installation, fitting, and assembly of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems onto new and existing platforms or equipment.
  • Perform modifications, upgrades, and retrofits on equipment, ensuring all changes are executed according to updated specifications and safety standards.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair complex system malfunctions across mechanical, electrical, and structural components to minimize downtime.
  • Utilize a wide variety of hand, power, and pneumatic tools to assemble, disassemble, and modify components with high precision.
  • Conduct comprehensive pre-functional checks and operational tests on newly installed systems to verify functionality and ensure they meet performance criteria.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on all outfitted equipment and systems to prevent failures and extend operational life.
  • Measure, cut, drill, and shape materials such as metal, composites, and plastics to facilitate custom fitting and installation of components.
  • Ensure all work performed is documented accurately and completely in maintenance logs, work orders, and digital tracking systems.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and industry safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Collaborate directly with engineers and project managers to provide feedback on design for manufacturability and identify potential installation issues.
  • Operate lifting and rigging equipment, such as overhead cranes and forklifts, to safely move and position heavy components and assemblies.
  • Perform alignment and calibration of sensitive equipment and instrumentation to ensure they operate within specified tolerances.
  • Manage the installation of custom cabinetry, flooring, insulation, and other interior components with a high degree of finish and quality.
  • Conduct final inspections on completed outfitting projects to ensure all work meets stringent quality assurance standards and client specifications.
  • Maintain accountability for tools, equipment, and inventory of parts used for outfitting projects, reporting any shortages or defects.
  • Route and install wiring harnesses, conduits, and electrical components, ensuring proper connections and terminations are made.
  • Install and test pneumatic and hydraulic lines, fittings, and actuators, checking for leaks and ensuring proper system pressure.
  • Respond to and resolve unscheduled maintenance demands and emergency repair situations in a timely and effective manner.
  • Fabricate and weld custom brackets, supports, and fixtures as needed to support unique installation requirements.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the training and mentoring of junior technicians and apprentices on proper outfitting techniques and safety procedures.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by providing practical feedback to enhance installation processes and reduce waste.
  • Support the engineering team in the development and testing of prototypes for new products or system upgrades.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the work area, ensuring a "5S" (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) environment.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Advanced ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings, schematics (electrical, hydraulic), and work instructions.
  • Mechanical Systems Expertise: Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, including gears, bearings, drivetrains, and power transmission.
  • Hand & Power Tool Proficiency: Mastery of a wide range of tools, including torque wrenches, grinders, drills, and precision measurement instruments.
  • Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: Systematic approach to identifying the root cause of mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic failures.
  • Precision Measurement: Skilled in using calipers, micrometers, and other gauges to ensure components meet tight tolerance requirements.

  • Knowledge of Safety Protocols: Deep understanding and practical application of LOTO, fall protection, and other industrial safety standards.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 5+ years of experience in a role specifically focused on equipment outfitting, vehicle upfitting, or custom systems integration. Experience in a lean manufacturing environment is a significant plus.
