The Manufacturing Production Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing all manufacturing activities to ensure safe, efficient, compliant, and cost-effective production. This role drives daily production schedules, enforces quality and safety standards, implements continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives, manages labor and equipment resources, and partners with supply chain, engineering, and quality teams to achieve on-time delivery, target yield, and profitability goals. The Production Manager translates business objectives into operational plans, monitors performance via KPI dashboards (OEE, throughput, scrap, on-time delivery, cycle time), and leads cross-functional problem solving to resolve production constraints.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and execute daily, weekly, and monthly production plans to meet customer delivery schedules and inventory targets while optimizing capacity utilization across multiple production lines and shifts.
  • Lead, coach, and develop production supervisors, lead operators, and frontline staff to achieve performance objectives, build a continuous improvement culture, and maintain high retention and engagement levels.
  • Manage labor planning and scheduling including shift assignments, overtime forecasting, headcount justification, and deployment of contingency resources during demand spikes or equipment outages.
  • Set, monitor, and continuously improve key operational KPIs (OEE, throughput, first-pass yield, cycle time, on-time delivery, scrap rates, downtime) and create clear visual management dashboards for real-time decision making.
  • Oversee equipment reliability and maintenance strategy in coordination with maintenance teams to reduce unplanned downtime, implement preventive maintenance plans, and support capital projects and equipment upgrades.
  • Drive lean manufacturing programs — value stream mapping, 5S, Kaizen events, standard work, and SMED — to reduce waste, shorten lead times, and lower production costs while improving safety and quality.
  • Ensure full compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations (OSHA or local equivalents), company EHS policies, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and hazard mitigation including incident investigation and corrective actions.
  • Partner with Quality Assurance and Engineering to implement robust process controls, root cause analysis for defects, corrective and preventive actions (CAPA), and continuous reduction of nonconformances and customer complaints.
  • Own production cost control initiatives, identify cost-to-serve drivers, propose efficiency measures, and collaborate with finance to meet budget, margin, and cost-savings targets.
  • Lead new product introductions (NPI) and production ramp-ups by coordinating cross-functional readiness (process documentation, line balancing, tooling, training) to meet launch timelines and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with procurement and supply chain teams to manage raw material availability, build safety stock strategies, and mitigate supplier or logistics disruptions that impact production continuity.
  • Implement and enforce production and process documentation including work instructions, SOPs, quality checkpoints, and change control to ensure consistent execution and audit readiness.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, capacity planning sessions, and forecasting exercises to align production capacity with demand and identify investment requirements for long-term throughput improvements.
  • Manage capital expenditures for production equipment, tooling, and automation projects by evaluating ROI, supporting vendor selection, and overseeing installation, validation, and commissioning activities.
  • Coordinate cross-functional problem solving for critical manufacturing issues using structured methodologies (5 Whys, A3, DMAIC) and ensure sustainable corrective actions are implemented and validated.
  • Ensure accurate production reporting, timekeeping, and cost allocation in ERP/MRP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics) and drive data integrity for capacity and yield analytics.
  • Maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders (R&D, Quality, Supply Chain, Sales, Finance) to prioritize production schedules, expedite critical orders, and resolve escalations with visible leadership.
  • Oversee training programs to insource critical skills, certify operators on new equipment/processes, and maintain competency matrices aligned to production requirements.
  • Manage plant-level inventory controls including WIP optimization, cycle counts, shortage investigations, and reduction of obsolescence to improve working capital.
  • Lead sustainability and energy-efficiency initiatives in production operations, targeting reductions in energy use, waste generation, and emissions consistent with corporate sustainability goals.
  • Ensure customer-facing activities such as production status updates, sample approvals, and manufacturing support for customer audits and technical requests are timely and accurate.
  • Act as the primary operational contact during production crises, coordinating rapid response teams, communicating status to leadership and customers, and driving recovery to minimize business disruption.
  • Oversee compliance with product traceability, serialization, and regulatory labeling requirements where applicable, and ensure record retention for audits and inspections.

  • Support cross-functional continuous improvement projects that extend beyond the production floor, including supplier development, process digitization, and shop floor automation pilots.
  • Contribute to plant-level strategy development and execution, including annual operating plans, headcount planning, and CAPEX prioritization.
  • Facilitate regular safety, quality, and production review meetings and document action items, owners, and closure timelines.
  • Mentor and develop high-potential employees for succession planning and rotational development across manufacturing functions.
  • Participate in vendor selection and contract negotiations for equipment, tooling, and service providers to secure favorable terms and reliable delivery.
  • Support company-wide operational excellence initiatives, including piloting new manufacturing technologies and scaling proven solutions across other sites.
  • Provide manufacturing input to product design reviews to improve manufacturability, reduce cost-to-produce, and accelerate time-to-market.
  • Prepare and present operational performance reports to senior leadership, translating production metrics into business impact and recommended actions.
  • Coordinate external regulatory inspections and certification activities with quality and compliance teams and ensure timely resolution of findings.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Operations Management, or a related technical discipline; or equivalent technical diploma with substantial manufacturing experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus advanced training in Lean Six Sigma (Green Belt or Black Belt preferred), MBA or relevant graduate degree for senior roles.
