Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct in-depth diagnostics, troubleshooting, and major/minor repairs on a variety of marine propulsion systems, including gasoline and diesel inboard, outboard, and sterndrive engines.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance according to manufacturer specifications, including oil changes, fuel system cleaning, tune-ups, and lower unit servicing.
  • Diagnose and repair complex 12V/24V DC and 120V/240V AC marine electrical systems, including wiring, charging systems, batteries, inverters, and shore power components.
    s- Install, configure, and troubleshoot a wide range of marine electronics, such as GPS/chart plotters, radar, sonar, autopilot systems, and NMEA 2000 networks.
  • Service and repair marine plumbing and sanitation systems, including fresh and raw water pumps, holding tanks, macerators, and bilge pump systems.
  • Address issues with marine HVAC systems, performing diagnostics, refrigerant recharging, and component replacement on air conditioning and heating units.
  • Perform bottom painting, including surface preparation, primer and anti-fouling paint application, and running gear painting.
  • Conduct fiberglass, composite, and gelcoat repairs, addressing everything from minor cosmetic scratches to structural damage.
  • Execute new boat commissioning and pre-delivery inspections, ensuring all systems are operational and meet factory and dealership quality standards.
  • Winterize and summerize boats and all associated systems, including engines, water systems, and air conditioners, to prevent damage during off-season storage.
  • Rig new and used boats with engines, electronics, and accessories, ensuring clean and professional installation that adheres to ABYC standards.
  • Perform sea trials and on-water testing to verify and document the success of repairs and diagnose performance-related issues under real-world conditions.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematics to effectively diagnose and repair a diverse range of marine equipment.
  • Complete detailed and accurate work orders, documenting all parts used, labor hours, and a clear description of the work performed for billing and service history.
  • Interface directly with customers to explain complex technical issues, provide repair estimates, and offer recommendations for preventative maintenance.
  • Manage the removal, transportation, and re-installation of marine engines and other large components using lifts, cranes, and other heavy equipment.
  • Perform propeller and shaft alignment, repair, and replacement to ensure smooth operation and prevent vibration and damage to the drivetrain.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, including steering systems, trim tabs, and yacht stabilizers.
  • Ensure all work performed complies with American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) standards, as well as EPA and OSHA safety regulations.
  • Stay current with the latest marine technology, engine models, and service bulletins by attending manufacturer-sponsored training and certification courses.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in the service bay, on the dock, and aboard customer vessels.
  • Assist in the mentoring and on-the-job training of apprentice technicians and shop assistants.
  • Accurately manage parts inventory for assigned jobs, ensuring correct parts are ordered, documented, and billed.
  • Participate in yard operations, including the safe hauling, blocking, and launching of vessels using travel lifts, forklifts, and trailers.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Mastery of gasoline and diesel marine engine theory, diagnostics, and repair.
  • Proficiency with OEM diagnostic software (e.g., Mercury G3, Yamaha YDIS, Volvo Penta VODIA).
  • Expertise in 12V/24V DC and 120V/240V AC marine electrical systems and troubleshooting.
  • Strong understanding of marine plumbing, sanitation, and HVAC systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
