Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform field service installations, start-ups, and commissioning of material handling systems including conveyors, sortation systems, palletizers, automatic storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS), robotic pick/pack cells, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and lift/stacker equipment according to manufacturer specifications and customer requirements.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and controls faults on-site using structured troubleshooting methods, schematics, multimeters, clamp meters, and portable diagnostic tools to restore system operation with minimal customer downtime.
  • Troubleshoot and program PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Rockwell, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron) and modify ladder logic or function block code to implement field fixes, clarifications, or minor enhancements following change control procedures.
  • Troubleshoot and configure variable frequency drives (VFDs), motor starters, motor controls, and servo drives to resolve speed, torque, or drive-related issues and optimize system performance.
  • Replace and align mechanical components such as bearings, pulleys, belts, chains, sprockets, gearboxes, and rollers; perform mechanical adjustments and precision alignments to industry tolerances.
  • Inspect, service, and repair pneumatics and hydraulics systems including cylinders, valves, air prep units, filters, hoses, and fittings; perform leak detection and pressure testing.
  • Perform electrical wiring, splicing, conduit work, and panel modifications to NEC/NFPA and company standards; install sensors, limit switches, proximity detectors, encoders, HMIs, and safety devices.
  • Execute preventive maintenance programs and scheduled PM visits, performing lubrication, tensioning, inspections, sensor calibration, and system performance checks; document findings and recommend improvements.
  • Conduct safety audits and maintain compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E electrical safety, lockout/tagout, machine guarding, and site-specific safety procedures; implement safety corrective actions as necessary.
  • Perform functional testing, signal tracing, and I/O verification to validate sensors, actuators, and control system interactions during commissioning and post-repair testing.
  • Interface directly with customer site management and operations teams to provide status updates, root cause explanations, and recommended corrective actions while maintaining high customer satisfaction and professionalism.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior technicians and apprentices in the field, sharing best practices for diagnostics, repairs, and safe working procedures.
  • Maintain accurate service reports, timecards, parts usage records, and digital documentation in service management systems (CRM/FSR) and ticketing platforms; close work orders with detailed notes and recommendations.
  • Coordinate spare parts procurement, manage on-van inventory, and identify long-lead items required for complex repairs; work with parts coordinators to expedite critical component deliveries.
  • Apply retrofit, upgrade, and modernization techniques to extend asset life—installing new PLCs, HMIs, sensors, drives, or mechanical upgrades to meet evolving throughput or reliability targets.
  • Perform root cause analysis following major failures, prepare corrective action reports, and propose design or maintenance changes to prevent recurrence and improve mean time between failures (MTBF).
  • Carry out software/firmware updates, backup and restore PLC/HMI programs, and ensure version control and documentation of control changes; maintain cyber-physical awareness of system integrity.
  • Support emergency on-call rotations and be available for overtime or weekend assignments to support critical customer outages or scheduled shutdowns.
  • Train customer operations and maintenance staff on safe operation, daily checks, troubleshooting basics, and preventive maintenance tasks to improve first-response resolution rates and reduce repeat service calls.
  • Work collaboratively with sales, engineering, project management, and commissioning teams to provide pre-sales support, site surveys, and field feedback that inform system design and service offerings.
  • Utilize mobile devices, tablets, and diagnostic software to capture photos, videos, and data logs for remote support escalations and knowledge base entries.
  • Maintain company vehicle, tools, and test equipment; perform regular calibration checks and keep an organized, professional service van appearance to reflect company standards.

  • Provide remote troubleshooting assistance via phone, video, or remote access tools to reduce onsite visit requirements and speed up issue resolution.
  • Support spare parts inventory optimization by reporting part failure trends and suggesting stock levels for frequently replaced components.
  • Assist sales and engineering with site surveys, bill of materials (BOM) verification, and recommendations for system scalability or automation improvements.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives (Kaizen, 5S) to improve service efficiency, first-time-fix rates, and parts logistics.
  • Contribute to technical knowledge base articles, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and troubleshooting guides used across the service organization.
  • Support warranty claim documentation and follow company processes for warranty eligibility, reporting root cause, and capturing failed components.
  • Attend product and safety training sessions to maintain certifications and update skills on new equipment platforms and vendor products.
  • Liaise with third-party vendors and subcontractors when specialized repairs or certifications (e.g., crane inspections, laser alignments) are required.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with technical certifications or equivalent field experience.

Preferred Education:
