Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform field density testing on soils, aggregates, and asphalt using a nuclear density gauge to ensure proper compaction and stability meet project requirements.
  • Collect representative samples of construction materials from project sites, including hot mix asphalt, fresh concrete, masonry, and soil, for subsequent laboratory analysis.
  • Conduct a range of laboratory tests on concrete specimens, such as compressive and flexural strength tests, to verify they meet or exceed design specifications.
  • Prepare and cast concrete cylinders, beams, and mortar/grout cubes in the field according to strict ASTM procedures for future strength and quality testing.
  • Perform soil classification, moisture content determination, and standard/modified proctor tests to assess the engineering properties and suitability of site soils for construction.
  • Execute quality control tests on hot mix asphalt during placement, including measurements of temperature, density, and thickness on newly placed pavement.
  • Maintain meticulous and accurate records of all test results, field observations, and daily construction activities in detailed reports for project management and client review.
  • Calibrate, clean, and maintain laboratory and field testing equipment to ensure operational accuracy, reliability, and compliance with industry standards.
  • Read and interpret project plans, blueprints, and technical specifications to thoroughly understand testing requirements and material compliance criteria.
  • Communicate test results, field observations, and any identified non-conformance issues clearly and promptly to site superintendents, engineers, and project managers.
  • Monitor and document critical construction activities, such as concrete pours, rebar placement, and earthwork operations, to ensure they are performed according to approved plans.
  • Perform comprehensive aggregate testing, including sieve analysis (gradation), specific gravity, and absorption tests, to determine the quality and characteristics of materials.
  • Uphold a strong safety culture by strictly adhering to all company and site-specific safety protocols and consistently wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Assist geotechnical engineers with field investigations, which may include logging soil borings, conducting infiltration tests, and collecting subsurface samples.
  • Prepare and submit daily field reports that summarize all testing activities, locations, results, and any deviations from the project specifications.
  • Coordinate effectively with contractors and client representatives on-site to schedule testing and inspection services, minimizing disruption to the construction schedule.
  • Operate company vehicles safely and responsibly to transport sensitive equipment and material samples to and from various project sites.
  • Review and master testing procedures outlined by standards organizations like ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials).
  • Perform inspections of reinforcing steel (rebar) placement to ensure correct size, grade, spacing, and clearance before concrete encapsulation.
  • Conduct masonry testing, including mortar and grout sampling and prism testing, to verify compliance with structural requirements for building construction.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist senior technicians and laboratory managers with more complex, non-routine testing procedures and special research projects.
  • Participate in internal and external audits of the laboratory's procedures and Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of internal testing protocols, safety procedures, and reporting templates.
  • Mentor and provide on-the-job training for new or junior technicians to help them develop their skills and understanding of the role.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • ASTM/AASHTO Standards: Deep familiarity with standard test methods for soil, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates.
  • ACI Certification: ACI (American Concrete Institute) Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I certification is often a baseline requirement.
  • Nuclear Gauge Operation: Experience and certification for operating a nuclear density gauge for soil and asphalt compaction testing.
    -Plan Reading: Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and geotechnical reports to determine testing needs.
  • Technical Math: Strong mathematical skills for calculating test results, material quantities, densities, and percentages.
  • Report Writing: Proficiency in writing clear, concise, and accurate technical reports and maintaining detailed field logs.
  • NICET Certification: Certification from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) in Construction Materials Testing (Asphalt, Concrete, Soils) is highly valued.
  • Equipment Calibration: Knowledge of the procedures for calibrating and verifying the accuracy of laboratory and field equipment.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-5 years

Preferred: 1-3 years of direct experience in construction materials testing and inspection is highly preferred. A strong combination of relevant certifications (such as ACI, NICET, or state DOT-specific certs) and a demonstrated mechanical aptitude may be considered in lieu of direct experience for promising entry-level candidates. A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is typically required.
