Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Deliver targeted, one-on-one and small-group math instruction tailored to each student's current proficiency and learning goals, covering arithmetic, pre-algebra, algebra I & II, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus (AB/BC), and introductory statistics.
  • Assess initial skill levels using diagnostic assessments and interviews to develop individualized learning plans that set measurable short-term and long-term objectives tied to grade-level standards and student goals.
  • Design and implement lesson plans that break down complex mathematical concepts into scaffolded steps, using multiple representations (visual, symbolic, contextual) to promote deep conceptual understanding.
  • Provide explicit instruction on problem-solving strategies, show-work procedures, and mathematical reasoning, coaching students to explain their thinking and arrive at solutions independently.
  • Prepare students for standardized exams (SAT Math, ACT Math, AP Calculus, AP Statistics, state assessments) by teaching content, timing strategies, question analysis, and targeted practice on common item types.
  • Use formative assessments and regular progress monitoring (quizzes, exit tickets, homework review) to adjust instruction, identify misconceptions, and document measurable growth over time.
  • Create original practice problems, worksheets, and real-world application tasks that align with each student’s goals and curriculum pacing to reinforce skills and build automaticity.
  • Integrate educational technology—interactive whiteboards, Desmos, GeoGebra, online graphing tools, learning management systems, and virtual classroom software—to enhance instruction and maintain engagement in remote sessions.
  • Provide timely, actionable feedback on homework, quizzes, and practice tests that identifies specific areas for improvement and prescribes concrete next steps for mastery.
  • Differentiate instruction for diverse learners, including students with IEPs/504 plans, English language learners, gifted students, and those with math anxiety, adapting pacing, language, and scaffolds accordingly.
  • Establish a positive, encouraging learning environment that builds student confidence, fosters a growth mindset, and reduces math anxiety through praise for effort, incremental challenges, and consistent routines.
  • Track and maintain detailed records of session notes, progress reports, assessment scores, attendance, and billing information using the organization’s LMS or CRM to support transparency and accountability.
  • Communicate regularly with parents, guardians, teachers, and school counselors about student progress, recommended outside practice, upcoming benchmarks, and strategies to reinforce learning at home.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to align tutoring sessions with current classroom topics, upcoming assessments, and curricular standards to ensure continuity of instruction.
  • Implement homework review protocols: diagnose errors, reteach targeted skills, and assign scaffolded practice focused on common misunderstandings rather than rote repetition.
  • Model mathematical language and vocabulary, explicitly teaching definitions, symbols, notation, and problem statement translation to improve comprehension and test performance.
  • Monitor student engagement and adjust lesson pacing, question types, and activity formats to maintain focus and learning efficiency during both 1:1 and small-group sessions.
  • Prepare and administer practice exams and simulated test conditions to build stamina and accurate timing, analyze results, and design remediation plans for weak areas.
  • Mentor and onboard new tutors by sharing best practices, instructional materials, sample lesson plans, and observation-based feedback to maintain high tutoring standards across the program.
  • Maintain professional development through ongoing coursework, workshops, and research on evidence-based math pedagogy, curriculum changes, and assessment trends.
  • Uphold confidentiality and ethical boundaries in all communications and documentation, ensuring sensitive student information and assessment data are securely managed.
  • Manage scheduling, cancellations, and makeup sessions professionally while keeping families informed and minimizing disruption to student progress.
  • Encourage meta-cognitive skills by teaching students how to set learning goals, self-monitor progress, and apply study strategies that transfer across math topics and other subjects.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the creation and curation of a centralized library of lesson plans, worksheets, video tutorials, and adaptive practice sets for tutors and students.
  • Assist with intake interviews and onboarding procedures for new students, collecting academic history, relevant school materials, and learning preferences.
  • Contribute to marketing efforts by participating in open houses, parent information sessions, and community outreach events to describe services and demonstrate instructional value.
  • Participate in regular team meetings to share student progress, discuss challenging cases, and align on program goals and tutoring best practices.
  • Help maintain and update online scheduling systems, attendance logs, and tutor availability calendars to optimize matching and capacity planning.
  • Pilot and provide feedback on new instructional technologies and platform features to improve remote tutoring effectiveness and user experience.
  • Compile weekly or monthly progress summaries for program managers that include qualitative notes, assessment trends, and recommended next steps for students.
  • Provide occasional coverage for substitute tutoring sessions or group workshops when demand spikes or staff are unavailable.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Mastery of K–12 and introductory college math topics: arithmetic, number sense, algebra I & II, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus (limits, derivatives, integrals), and basic statistics.
