  • CAD Technician or Drafter (Entry-Level)
  • Associate's Degree in Drafting & Design Technology
  • Engineering Internship with a focus on CAD/Design

Advancement To:

  • Senior Mechanical Drafter / Lead Drafter
  • Mechanical Designer
  • Design Engineer or Mechanical Engineer (with further education)

Lateral Moves:

  • CAD Administrator
  • Manufacturing Engineering Technician
  • Quality Control Inspector

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Create, modify, and manage complex 3D models and detailed 2D drawings of mechanical components and assemblies using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor).
  • Develop comprehensive assembly drawings, including exploded views, and generate accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) for procurement and manufacturing.
  • Apply a strong understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) in accordance with ASME Y14.5 standards to ensure functional and manufacturable parts.
  • Revise and update existing drawings and models based on engineering change notices (ECNs), redlined markups, and verbal instructions from the engineering team.
  • Collaborate directly with mechanical engineers and designers to translate conceptual designs and layouts into fully detailed and producible technical documentation.
  • Ensure all drawings, models, and related documentation adhere to established company drafting standards, procedures, and industry best practices.
  • Perform detailed tolerance stack-up analysis to verify proper fit, form, and function of mechanical assemblies and interacting components.
  • Generate specific fabrication drawings for various manufacturing processes, including sheet metal, machined parts, weldments, and plastic injection molding.
  • Maintain and organize the digital drawing vault and CAD library, implementing robust version control and ensuring the integrity of design data.
  • Assist in the creation and review of technical product documentation, including user manuals, assembly instructions, and service guides.
  • Meticulously review and self-check your own work, as well as peer-review the drawings of other team members, for accuracy, completeness, and clarity.
  • Act as a key liaison between the engineering department and the manufacturing/production floor to resolve design-related questions and support fabrication efforts.
  • Actively participate in formal and informal design review meetings, providing critical feedback on manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and adherence to drafting standards.
  • Develop photorealistic renderings and visualizations of mechanical designs to support marketing presentations, client proposals, and internal reviews.
  • Support rapid prototyping initiatives by preparing and exporting appropriate file types (e.g., STL, STEP) for 3D printing and providing necessary drawings for the model shop.
  • Calculate dimensions, clearances, material requirements, and standard hardware component selections based on engineering specifications and sketches.
  • Manage the workflow of engineering change requests (ECRs) and engineering change orders (ECOs) through the company's PDM/PLM system.

Secondary Functions

  • Support engineering and manufacturing teams with ad-hoc drawing requests and data extraction from CAD models.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of drafting standards, CAD library organization, and documentation control processes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including design engineering, manufacturing, and quality assurance, to translate project needs into precise technical documentation.
  • Participate in project planning meetings and design reviews, adhering to agile or stage-gate project management principles.
