Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead, coach, and develop a multi-disciplinary mechanical engineering team responsible for product architecture, detailed mechanical design, analysis, and verification—setting clear goals, conducting performance reviews, and fostering a data-driven, continuous-improvement culture.
  • Own end-to-end mechanical product development programs (concept, detailed design, prototyping, validation, pilot production, and scale-up), ensuring deliverables meet customer requirements, cost targets, and schedule milestones.
  • Manage resource planning, hiring, workload prioritization, and capacity forecasting for the mechanical engineering organization to align with company roadmaps and strategic priorities.
  • Drive design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) initiatives with manufacturing and supply chain teams to reduce unit cost, simplify assembly, and improve yield across new and existing products.
  • Provide technical direction and hands-on mentorship in CAD (SolidWorks, Creo, NX), 3D modeling, tolerance stack-ups, and GD&T application to ensure consistent, manufacturable drawings and BOMs.
  • Oversee structural, thermal, vibration, and fatigue analysis activities (FEA, CFD) either internally or via external consultants; validate assumptions and ensure simulation results support product requirements and safety margins.
  • Establish and enforce engineering change control (ECO/ECN), configuration management, and product data management (PDM/PLM) processes to maintain traceability and product baseline integrity.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders (electrical, software, test, operations, quality, procurement, regulatory) to translate market and customer requirements into technical specifications and product release criteria.
  • Lead prototyping, lab testing, and validation programs (test plans, test fixtures, test reports) and make technical trade-offs to meet performance, reliability, and certification objectives.
  • Manage supplier selection, technical sourcing, qualification, and performance management for outsourced components and assemblies; drive supplier corrective actions and design improvements when required.
  • Own cost-down and value engineering initiatives across the product portfolio—identify parts consolidation, alternative materials, and process improvements to meet gross margin goals.
  • Ensure product compliance with applicable industry standards and regulations (ISO 9001, ISO 13485, AS9100, UL, CE, RoHS, or industry-specific certifications) and prepare supporting technical documentation for audits.
  • Define and monitor engineering KPIs (on-time delivery, first-pass yield, cost variance, design cycle time) and implement process improvements using Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Support cross-functional program management activities including risk identification, mitigation planning (DFMEA), schedule management, and escalation protocols to keep programs on track.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective action processes (8D, RCA) for field failures, returns, and warranty issues, and ensure robust design updates and serviceability improvements are implemented.
  • Author and review technical specifications, requirement documents, and product architecture artifacts to ensure clarity, completeness, and testability.
  • Prepare and manage operating budgets, capital expenditure requests for lab/test equipment, and investment cases for process automation and tooling.
  • Drive product industrialization and pilot production activities: tooling design and validation, production line transfer, process documentation, and initial production support to achieve stable manufacturing ramp.
  • Mentor engineers on career development, technical skill-building, and cross-training to build bench strength and succession within the organization.
  • Represent mechanical engineering in customer-facing technical reviews, program status meetings, and design reviews; present technical decisions and trade-offs clearly to executives and external partners.
  • Champion safety, environmental, and ergonomics considerations in product and process design to meet corporate EHS objectives and reduce field risk.
  • Maintain an up-to-date technology roadmap for mechanical capabilities (additive manufacturing, advanced materials, sensor integration) and pilot new technologies to accelerate product differentiation.
  • Coordinate with procurement and legal on supplier contracts, quality agreements, and IP protection strategies related to mechanical designs and supplier deliverables.
  • Drive documentation readiness for production: work instructions, assembly guides, test procedures, and maintenance manuals to enable smooth handoffs to operations and service teams.

Secondary Functions

  • Facilitate regular interface with Program Management to align engineering deliverables with program governance and customer milestones.
  • Participate in sales and business development meetings to provide technical insight during pre-sales, proposals, and bid reviews.
  • Support manufacturing troubleshooting and continuous improvement on the factory floor during ramp and high-volume production.
  • Provide engineering support for aftermarket and field service teams on complex repairs, retrofits, and upgrades.
  • Maintain an engineering training program and knowledge base to capture lessons learned, design standards, and reusable design libraries.
  • Represent the company at industry conferences, standards committees, and technical working groups as required.
  • Occasionally travel to supplier sites, contract manufacturers, and customer locations for technical alignment, audits, and problem resolution.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced competency in 3D CAD and solid modeling (SolidWorks, Creo, NX) with experience in CAD best practices, drawing standards, and BOM management.
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and simulation experience (ANSYS, Abaqus, COMSOL) for structural, thermal, and modal analysis; ability to interpret and act on simulation results.
  • Deep understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5), tolerance analysis, and tolerance stack-up to ensure fit, function, and manufacturability.
  • Expertise in design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and cost reduction methodologies for injection molding, sheet metal, machining, and plastics.
  • Proven experience with PLM/PDM systems (Siemens Teamcenter, PTC Windchill, SolidWorks PDM) to manage revisions, ECOs, and configuration control.
  • Proficiency in product validation: creating and executing test plans, reliability testing, environmental testing (thermal, vibration, humidity), and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes: CNC machining, stamping, injection molding, extrusion, fastening, welding, and assembly automation.
  • Experience with quality and regulatory systems: ISO 9001, AS9100, ISO 13485, APQP, PPAP, DFMEA, and CAPA processes.
  • Strong supplier engineering skills: supplier qualification, technical audits, NPI support, and supplier-driven cost improvements.
  • Budgeting and program financial management skills: cost forecasting, variance analysis, and capital expenditure planning.
  • Familiarity with electronics and mechatronics integration, thermal management, and enclosure design considerations.
  • Hands-on prototyping skills including rapid prototyping, 3D printing, and lab instrumentation for product verification.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related engineering discipline.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Management, or MBA (preferred for senior manager roles).
  • Professional registration (PE) or certifications in project management (PMP), Six Sigma, or relevant technical specialties are a plus.
