  • Develop and implement departmental goals, strategic initiatives, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to enhance team performance and overall efficiency.
  • Manage project timelines, resource allocation, and departmental budgets to ensure projects are consistently delivered on schedule and within financial constraints.
  • Act as the primary technical authority for all mechanical design activities, providing expert guidance, resolving complex technical challenges, and making critical design decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional leaders from electrical engineering, software, industrial design, manufacturing, and marketing to ensure seamless product integration and alignment with business goals.
  • Drive the strategic selection of materials, manufacturing processes, and key components to optimize for performance, cost, manufacturability, and long-term reliability.
  • Review and formally approve all critical engineering documentation, including 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and tolerance analyses (GD&T).
  • Establish and maintain rigorous design verification and validation (DV&V) testing protocols to ensure products meet and exceed all functional, performance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Champion the adoption and effective use of advanced engineering tools and methodologies, such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), for robust simulation and analysis.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, provide constructive and actionable feedback, and actively support the professional development and career growth of each team member.
  • Interface directly with external vendors, suppliers, and contract manufacturers to manage technical requirements, ensure quality control, and oversee component sourcing and qualification.
  • Lead formal Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) reviews with internal and external partners to ensure designs are optimized for efficient and cost-effective production at scale.
  • Prepare and present technical status reports, comprehensive project updates, and strategic recommendations to senior management and key executive stakeholders.
  • Foster a culture of innovation by encouraging creative problem-solving, staying abreast of emerging technologies, and identifying and pursuing intellectual property opportunities.
  • Ensure all engineering activities and product designs strictly comply with relevant industry standards (e.g., ASME, ISO), safety regulations, and internal quality management systems.
  • Manage the departmental operating budget, including accurate forecasting for staffing, software licenses, hardware upgrades, and laboratory equipment needs.
  • Direct comprehensive root cause analysis investigations for field failures or significant production issues, implementing effective corrective and preventive action (CAPA) plans.
  • Define and oversee the prototyping strategy for the department, from rapid-turn 3D prints for initial concept validation to fully functional, production-intent models for testing.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering department to refine workflows, reduce development cycle times, and enhance overall product quality and reliability.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide expert technical consultation and support to other departments, such as sales, marketing, and field support, on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Contribute to the organization's long-term technology roadmap and product strategy by identifying trends and opportunities for innovation.
  • Collaborate with non-technical business units to translate complex engineering concepts and features into understandable customer benefits and value propositions.
  • Participate in or lead agile project management ceremonies (e.g., sprint planning, stand-ups) if the team operates within an agile development framework.
