Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform scheduled preventative and predictive maintenance on mechanical systems including bearings, gearboxes, couplings, V-belts, chains, conveyors, pumps and compressors; document work performed, parts used and measured outcomes to reduce mean time between failures (MTBF).
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair mechanical failures on rotating and fixed equipment using root-cause analysis; recommend and implement corrective actions to improve reliability and reduce recurrence.
  • Disassemble, inspect, repair and reassemble pumps, motors, gear reducers and hydraulic components to OEM tolerances; perform alignments, shaft repairs and dynamic balancing as needed to restore equipment to specification.
  • Execute mechanical installations and retrofits of production equipment, fixtures and safety guards; read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics and assembly instructions to achieve accurate installations.
  • Operate lift equipment and rigging safely to move and install heavy mechanical components; prepare lift plans and follow rigging best practices to mitigate risk during heavy equipment maintenance.
  • Conduct lubrication management activities: select appropriate lubricants, perform greasing, oil changes, and sampling for contamination and wear analysis; maintain lubrication logs aligned to reliability program.
  • Support predictive maintenance programs by collecting vibration, thermography, oil analysis and acoustic emissions data; interpret trends and create actionable work orders for the maintenance schedule.
  • Perform minor welding, fabrication and machine shop tasks to fabricate brackets, couplers and temporary repairs while coordinating permanent repairs with engineering as required.
  • Troubleshoot and support electro-mechanical systems, including basic PLC I/O checks, motor starters, variable frequency drives (VFDs) and safety interlocks to isolate mechanical root causes and restore operation.
  • Maintain an orderly spare parts inventory and suggest stocking changes based on usage patterns and criticality to minimize downtime and improve parts availability.
  • Execute mechanical safety inspections and lockout/tagout procedures before performing maintenance; ensure compliance with OSHA, local regulations and company LOTO and confined-space policies.
  • Collaborate with production and operations leads to schedule maintenance windows that minimize impact to throughput while delivering required maintenance tasks on time and within budget.
  • Prepare clear, detailed maintenance reports, failure analyses and continuous improvement recommendations for Engineering and Reliability teams; track KPI improvements such as reduced downtime and MTTR (mean time to repair).
  • Participate in root cause workshops and 5S/Kaizen events to standardize mechanical repair processes and implement continuous improvement initiatives targeted at equipment reliability.
  • Train and mentor junior technicians and operators on basic mechanical troubleshooting, preventive maintenance tasks and safe work practices to elevate team capability and knowledge transfer.
  • Execute emergency repairs under pressure, making safe temporary repairs to restore production while communicating realistic timelines for permanent repairs.
  • Validate completed repairs through functional testing, run-in checks and performance verification against baseline metrics to ensure equipment meets operational requirements.
  • Support installation and calibration of mechanical sensors and instrumentation (pressure, flow, temperature) and ensure proper mechanical interfaces for accurate measurement and control.
  • Coordinate with vendors and external contractors for specialized mechanical repairs, aligning scopes, timelines and safety requirements; validate vendor work quality prior to acceptance.
  • Maintain compliance documentation for mechanical systems (inspections, certifications, calibrations) and participate in audits and regulatory inspections as required.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in routine facilities upkeep including HVAC filter changes, drain clearing, door/hinge repairs and building plumbing support to keep production environments safe and comfortable.
  • Support continuous improvement projects by testing mechanical modifications in pilot areas and collecting performance data to justify broader rollouts.
  • Provide mechanical input to capital project planning, including equipment specifications, expected maintenance activity, and life cycle cost estimates.
  • Help maintain documentation: update SOPs, maintenance procedures, mechanical drawings and parts lists to reflect as-built changes and improvements.
  • Participate in incident investigations by supplying mechanical expertise and test data to identify contributing mechanical factors and corrective actions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Mechanical troubleshooting and repair of industrial rotating equipment (motors, gearboxes, pumps, compressors, fans).
  • Preventive and predictive maintenance practices, including vibration analysis, infrared thermography and oil analysis interpretation.
  • Hands-on experience with alignment tools, dial indicators, laser alignment systems and dynamic balancing procedures.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics systems: valves, actuators, cylinders, pumps and filtration systems.
  • Basic electrical and electro-mechanical skills: motor starters, control circuits, PLC I/O basics and VFD operation/troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, P&IDs, schematics and BOMs (bill of materials).
  • Welding and fabrication skills (MIG/TIG/basic structural welding), cutting and metalworking for field repairs.
  • Use of hand and power tools, torque tools, hoists, rigging equipment, and safe lifting techniques.
  • Familiarity with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) for work order creation, parts tracking and maintenance scheduling.
  • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, and other safety certifications and knowledge of OSHA or local safety regulations.
  • Basic machining and bench fitting skills (lathe, mill, drilling, taps) for in-house repair work.
  • Experience with set-up, adjustment and troubleshooting of material handling systems (conveyors, rollers, indexing systems).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with relevant mechanical experience and trade certifications.

Preferred Education:

  • Technical diploma, associate degree or certificate in Mechanical Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Mechatronics, or a related field.
