Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate proactive media strategies to secure high-impact coverage across print, broadcast, and online media.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong, positive relationships with local, national, and international journalists, editors, producers, and influencers.
  • Write, edit, and distribute a wide range of compelling communications materials, including press releases, media advisories, op-eds, articles, and blog posts.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for all media inquiries, responding swiftly and effectively to manage the organization's reputation.
  • Proactively pitch stories, experts, and content to relevant media outlets, tailoring pitches to specific journalists and publications.
  • Organize, manage, and promote press conferences, media briefings, webinars, and other promotional events to maximize media attendance and coverage.
  • Prepare and coach key spokespeople for media interviews, public appearances, and presentations, including drafting talking points and Q&A documents.
  • Monitor media coverage and social media sentiment using tools like Cision or Meltwater, producing regular reports and analysis on KPIs and campaign effectiveness.
  • Manage and create engaging, on-brand content for the organization's social media platforms, including Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram.
  • Identify and capitalize on breaking news and trending topics to position the organization as a thought leader and expert source.
  • Manage the press/media section of the corporate website, ensuring it is up-to-date with the latest news, releases, and resources.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to ensure media strategies are integrated with broader marketing and digital campaigns for consistent messaging.
  • Lead on aspects of crisis communications, helping to develop plans and respond to sensitive issues to protect the organization's brand and reputation.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the creation of multimedia content, including infographics, short videos, and podcasts, to enhance storytelling and engagement.
  • Contribute to the writing and production of internal and external publications, such as annual reports, newsletters, and stakeholder communications.
  • Assist in managing the media relations budget, ensuring activities are delivered cost-effectively.
  • Maintain and continuously expand the central media contact database (CRM) to ensure it is accurate and comprehensive.
  • Research and stay abreast of the latest trends in media, public relations, and digital communications to inform strategy and tactics.
  • Provide ad-hoc media training and guidance to staff members across the organization to build internal communications capacity.
  • Liaise with partner organizations, stakeholders, and agencies on joint media announcements and collaborative campaigns.
