Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Receive, sort, and verify a high volume of patient specimens (such as blood, urine, and tissue) against requisition forms, ensuring all information is accurate and complete.
  • Perform precise and timely data entry of patient demographics, physician information, and ordered tests into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Execute specimen accessioning, which involves assigning unique laboratory identifiers and applying barcodes and labels with extreme accuracy to prevent patient identification errors.
  • Prepare diverse samples for analysis by centrifuging, aliquoting, and distributing them to the appropriate technical departments within the laboratory.
  • Operate, calibrate, and perform documented routine maintenance on basic laboratory equipment like centrifuges, incubators, refrigerators, and automated pre-analytical processors.
  • Skillfully identify and resolve pre-analytical specimen issues, such as incorrect labeling, insufficient quantity, or improper collection, and thoroughly document all corrective actions taken.
  • Orchestrate the timely pickup and delivery of specimens from various collection points, outpatient clinics, and hospital wards to the central laboratory processing area.
  • Manage the systematic storage, retrieval, and eventual disposal of patient specimens in accordance with laboratory retention policies and federal safety regulations.
  • Monitor and maintain an adequate inventory of laboratory supplies, reagents, and consumables, initiating orders through the proper channels to prevent operational shortages.
  • Adhere strictly to all laboratory safety protocols, including the consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and proper handling of biohazardous materials.
  • Comply with all HIPAA regulations to maintain the strict confidentiality and privacy of protected patient health information at all times.
  • Perform phlebotomy to collect blood samples from patients of all ages, demonstrating proficiency in venipuncture and skin puncture techniques while ensuring patient comfort and safety.
  • Assist Medical Technologists with the preparation of reagents, culture media, and stains used in various analytical procedures, following exact specifications.
  • Prepare specimen batches and corresponding documentation for shipment to reference laboratories, ensuring compliance with all packaging and transportation regulations (e.g., IATA).
  • Perform and document daily, weekly, and monthly quality control checks on equipment and temperature-sensitive storage units to ensure they are functioning within set parameters.
  • Answer incoming calls to the laboratory, professionally handling inquiries from physicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff regarding specimen requirements and test status.
  • Triage and prioritize specimens based on test priority (e.g., STAT, urgent) to ensure rapid turnaround times for critical patient results that impact immediate care.
  • Assist in the microbiology department by planting and streaking culture plates and preparing slides for microscopic examination under the guidance of a technologist.
  • Maintain meticulous and organized logs and records related to specimen handling, equipment maintenance, and quality control activities for accreditation and inspection purposes.
  • Participate actively in competency assessments and ongoing training programs to stay current with evolving laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and technologies.
  • Clean and disinfect workstations, equipment, and common laboratory areas to prevent cross-contamination and maintain a sterile and safe environment.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with the training and orientation of new Medical Lab Assistants and other laboratory support staff.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency, safety, and quality in the pre-analytical workflow.
  • Retrieve and compile data from the LIS to assist with quality assurance reports, workload statistics, and departmental audits.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to a collaborative and positive team environment.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Specimen Processing: Deep understanding of handling, centrifuging, and aliquoting various types of biological samples while maintaining specimen integrity for accurate testing.
  • Laboratory Information Systems (LIS): Proficiency in using LIS software for data entry, order entry, and specimen tracking (experience with systems like Epic Beaker, Cerner, or Sunquest is a plus).
  • Medical Terminology: A strong working knowledge of medical terms, abbreviations, and laboratory test names to ensure accurate order processing and communication.
  • Phlebotomy: Demonstrated skill in venipuncture and capillary collection techniques for diverse patient populations, if required by the role, with a focus on patient safety and sample quality.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
