Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute a diverse range of complex laboratory tests and procedures in areas such as hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, and immunology to aid in patient diagnosis.
  • Accurately prepare, label, and analyze patient specimens, including blood, urine, and tissue samples, ensuring strict adherence to established protocols.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain sophisticated laboratory instrumentation and equipment, such as automated analyzers, centrifuges, and microscopes.
  • Meticulously document and report test results into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and confidentiality.
  • Perform and document quality control procedures on all tests, reagents, and equipment to validate the accuracy and reliability of test results.
  • Identify and troubleshoot technical problems with laboratory equipment, analytical procedures, and unexpected test results, initiating corrective actions as needed.
  • Analyze blood samples for complete blood counts (CBC), coagulation studies, and other specialized hematological tests.
  • Culture and identify microorganisms from patient specimens to assist in the diagnosis of infectious diseases and determine antibiotic susceptibility.
  • Perform chemical analysis of body fluids to measure levels of critical components like glucose, electrolytes, enzymes, and hormones.
  • Prepare blood components for transfusion by conducting blood typing, cross-matching, and antibody screening procedures in the blood bank.
  • Follow all laboratory safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper handling and disposal of biohazardous materials.
  • Evaluate the validity of patient results by correlating data with other laboratory findings and clinical information, flagging any discrepancies.
  • Assist in the evaluation and implementation of new laboratory tests, procedures, and instrumentation to enhance departmental efficiency and capabilities.
  • Maintain detailed records of patient data, quality control, instrument maintenance, and corrective actions in compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, The Joint Commission).
  • Provide technical guidance and support to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff regarding test selection, specimen requirements, and result interpretation.
  • Participate in proficiency testing programs, treating survey samples as patient specimens to assess the laboratory's accuracy and performance.
  • Manage and maintain adequate inventory levels of laboratory supplies, reagents, and materials to ensure uninterrupted workflow.
  • Prepare slides for microscopic analysis, performing manual cell differentials and identifying abnormal cells, parasites, or crystals.
  • Conduct routine and specialized urinalysis tests, including physical, chemical, and microscopic examinations.
