Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological analyses on a variety of patient specimens with precision and accuracy.
  • Operate, calibrate, and conduct performance checks on a wide array of sophisticated laboratory instrumentation, ensuring equipment is in optimal working condition.
  • Analyze, review, and report test results in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), recognizing and verifying critical values and abnormal results before release.
  • Evaluate the validity of patient results by correlating data with other laboratory findings, patient conditions, and Quality Control (QC) information.
  • Perform and meticulously document routine and advanced quality control procedures, instrument maintenance, and any necessary corrective actions to ensure test integrity.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve instrument malfunctions, pre-analytical issues (e.g., specimen quality), and post-analytical discrepancies that may impact patient care.
  • Conduct complex immunohematology procedures, including blood typing, cross-matching, antibody screening, and identification to ensure transfusion safety.
  • Isolate, identify, and perform susceptibility testing on pathogenic microorganisms from clinical specimens to guide antimicrobial therapy.
  • Prepare and examine microscopic slides, such as peripheral blood smears, body fluid differentials, and gram stains, providing critical morphologic interpretations.
  • Adhere strictly to all established laboratory safety protocols, including the proper handling and disposal of biohazardous materials and chemicals.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate records of all tests performed, quality control data, and maintenance activities to comply with regulatory standards (CAP, CLIA, TJC).
  • Participate actively in proficiency testing programs (e.g., CAP surveys), investigating any discrepancies and implementing corrective measures as needed.
  • Prioritize and organize workflow effectively in a high-volume environment to meet established turnaround times for routine, STAT, and critical tests.
  • Communicate critical and other significant laboratory results to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers in a clear and timely manner.
  • Perform manual testing procedures that require a high degree of technical skill, interpretation, and independent judgment.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in managing and maintaining an adequate inventory of reagents, quality control materials, and laboratory supplies to prevent workflow disruptions.
  • Contribute to the training, orientation, and competency assessment of new employees, MLT/MLS students, and other laboratory staff.
  • Aid in the evaluation, validation, and implementation of new testing methodologies, instrumentation, and laboratory procedures.
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and patient safety.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and protect health information in full compliance with HIPAA regulations and institutional policies.
  • Provide technical support and serve as a resource for other laboratory staff, nurses, and physicians regarding test selection, specimen requirements, and result interpretation.
  • Review and update standard operating procedure (SOP) manuals as directed to reflect current practices and regulatory requirements.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and electronic health records (EHR).
  • Expertise in operating and troubleshooting automated analyzers in Hematology, Chemistry, and Coagulation (e.g., Sysmex XN series, Roche Cobas, Stago).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of immunohematology (Blood Bank) principles and techniques, including antibody identification.
  • Skilled in classic microbiology techniques, including culture interpretation, Gram staining, and susceptibility testing.
  • Experience with molecular diagnostic techniques (e.g., PCR) and/or mass spectrometry is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding and application of quality control principles, Westgard rules, and CAP/CLIA/TJC regulatory requirements.
  • Competency in manual and automated urinalysis and body fluid analysis.
  • Proficient in microscopic analysis, including peripheral smear review and cell differentials.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related science field from an accredited institution.
  • Must meet CLIA '88 requirements for high complexity testing.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science and a nationally recognized certification such as ASCP (MT/MLS) or AMT (MT).
