Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate a wide array of hand-held and stationary power tools, such as angle grinders, die grinders, belt sanders, and pedestal grinders, to remove excess material like welds, tool marks, and sharp edges.
  • Perform detailed deburring on machined, stamped, or cut metal components to ensure smooth, safe edges and proper fit for subsequent assembly.
  • Utilize various abrasive media, including grinding wheels, sanding discs, belts, and wire brushes, selecting the appropriate grit and material for different metals and desired finishes.
  • Read and interpret complex engineering blueprints, work orders, and technical schematics to understand the required dimensions, tolerances, and surface finish specifications for each part.
  • Execute precision polishing and buffing operations using specialized compounds and wheels to achieve mirror, satin, or other specified cosmetic finishes on stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and other metals.
  • Conduct thorough visual and tactile inspections of finished parts to identify and correct any surface defects, such as scratches, pits, or discoloration, ensuring they meet stringent quality benchmarks.
  • Prepare metal surfaces for subsequent processes like painting, powder coating, or plating by cleaning, degreasing, and creating the appropriate surface profile for optimal adhesion.
  • Set up, adjust, and maintain finishing equipment, including changing out abrasives, lubricating moving parts, and performing minor troubleshooting to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Follow all established safety protocols and procedures rigorously, including the consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, respirators, and hearing protection.
  • Manage workflow efficiently to meet production schedules and deadlines, prioritizing tasks based on production needs and part availability.
  • Document work performed on production logs or digital manufacturing execution systems (MES), recording part numbers, quantities, and time taken for each operation.
  • Work with a variety of metals, understanding their unique properties and how they react to different finishing techniques to prevent damage or undesirable results.
  • Blend and smooth welded seams and joints to create a seamless, invisible transition on fabricated assemblies, ensuring both structural integrity and a high-quality aesthetic.
  • Operate material handling equipment, such as pallet jacks, hoists, or overhead cranes, to safely move large or heavy workpieces to and from the finishing area.
  • Collaborate with welders, machinists, and assemblers to understand upstream and downstream process requirements and to troubleshoot quality issues collaboratively.
  • Utilize measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, and profilometers to verify that parts are finished to the correct dimensional tolerances.
  • Mask or protect designated areas of a workpiece to prevent them from being affected by the finishing process, as specified by blueprints.
  • Perform graining on stainless steel and other metals to create a uniform, linear, or non-directional satin finish according to customer specifications.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, adhering to 5S principles or other company lean manufacturing initiatives.
  • Select and mix cleaning solutions, acids, and other chemical agents for cleaning or treating metal surfaces, following strict safety and handling guidelines.

  • Assist in the regular inventory count and management of finishing supplies, such as abrasives, compounds, and PPE, reporting low stock levels to a supervisor.
  • Provide input and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing finishing processes, improving quality, and reducing production time.
  • Participate actively in team meetings, safety briefings, and training sessions to stay current with company policies and industry best practices.
  • Support maintenance personnel during the repair or preventative maintenance of larger finishing equipment.
