Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Accurately and efficiently read residential, commercial, and industrial electric, gas, and/or water meters, recording consumption data using a handheld electronic device or manual methods.
  • Traverse assigned daily routes, which involves extensive walking, standing, bending, and climbing for extended periods to access meters in various locations, including basements, yards, and secured areas.
  • Operate a company vehicle safely and responsibly to travel to and from assigned territories, adhering to all traffic laws and company driving policies.
  • Visually inspect meters and ancillary equipment for any defects, damage, or signs of tampering, and accurately report such findings through the proper channels.
  • Proactively identify and report potential safety hazards encountered on the route, such as gas leaks, downed power lines, aggressive animals, or unsafe property conditions.
  • Upload collected meter reading data from the handheld device to the central billing system at the end of each shift, ensuring data integrity and timeliness.
  • Maintain a consistent and high level of productivity to ensure all routes are completed within the scheduled timeframe for the billing cycle.
  • Interact with customers in a professional and courteous manner, answering basic questions about the meter reading process and providing information as needed.
  • Leave official company notices or door hangers at customer premises when access to a meter is unavailable or when other communication is required.
  • Navigate routes effectively using digital or physical maps, demonstrating strong spatial awareness and organizational skills to optimize route efficiency.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety procedures, protocols, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure personal and public safety.
  • Document and report any unusual situations, customer complaints, or access issues encountered during the workday to a direct supervisor.
  • Verify meter numbers and addresses against route information to prevent and correct data entry errors, ensuring each reading is assigned to the correct account.
  • Manage and secure all company-issued equipment, including the handheld device, vehicle, keys, and access tools, reporting any loss or malfunction immediately.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision for the majority of the workday, demonstrating a high level of self-motivation, discipline, and reliability.
  • Adapt to changing route assignments, weather conditions, and operational priorities as directed by management.
  • Reset or reprogram certain types of electronic meters as required by specific procedures after appropriate training.
  • Perform re-reads of meters as requested by the billing department to verify or correct questionable consumption data.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform minor meter maintenance tasks, such as cleaning glass or plastic meter covers, clearing overgrown vegetation, or removing small debris from meter boxes.
  • Assist in training new Meter Readers by shadowing them on routes and providing guidance on procedures, device usage, and safety best practices.
  • Participate actively in team meetings to discuss safety concerns, route efficiencies, operational challenges, and new company policies.
  • Maintain accurate logs of daily activities, including vehicle mileage, work hours, and any incidents that occurred on the route.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Handheld Device Proficiency: Ability to quickly learn and operate specialized handheld computers, scanners, and proprietary software for data collection.
  • Valid Driver's License: Possession of a valid, state-issued driver's license with a clean driving record is mandatory for operating a company vehicle.
  • Map Reading & Navigation: Strong ability to read and interpret digital and physical maps, GPS directions, and route sheets to navigate efficiently.
  • Basic Mathematical Aptitude: Competency in basic arithmetic to verify readings and identify figures that are clearly outside a normal range.
    -Knowledge of Safety Protocols: Understanding and application of workplace safety rules, particularly those related to public utilities, hazard identification, and defensive driving.
  • Basic Computer Literacy: Ability to interface with computer systems to upload data, check email, and complete digital paperwork or training modules.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0 - 2 years. This is often an excellent entry-level position.

Preferred:

  • 1+ years of experience in a role requiring significant outdoor work, driving, or route-based activity (e.g., mail or package delivery, landscaping, field surveys, security patrol).
  • Prior experience working in a regulated utility or a similar field service environment is a plus.
