Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Install, align, and secure new equipment and machinery (conveyors, pumps, compressors, gearboxes, presses, packaging lines) according to engineering drawings and manufacturer specifications, ensuring precise tolerances and safe operation.
  • Perform hands-on mechanical assemblies and disassemblies of large rotating and stationary equipment, including removal and replacement of shafts, couplings, bearings, seals, sprockets, and gear sets with proper lifting and rigging techniques.
  • Conduct precision shaft and machine alignment using laser alignment tools, dial indicators, and optical alignment methods to reduce vibration, minimize wear, and extend equipment life.
  • Troubleshoot complex mechanical failures by systematically diagnosing root causes through inspection, measurements, oil analysis, vibration data, and functional testing to recommend corrective actions.
  • Repair or rebuild gearboxes, pumps, motors (mechanical aspects), hydraulic power units, and pneumatic actuators; replace worn parts, reseal components, and verify tolerances and clearances.
  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance tasks per maintenance schedules: lubrication, belt and chain tensioning, bearing lubrication and replacement, filter changes, and visual inspections to maximize uptime.
  • Fabricate and modify mechanical components using shop equipment: cut, drill, mill, weld, and machine parts to restore or improve machinery functionality when replacement parts are unavailable.
  • Interpret and work from blueprints, mechanical drawings, P&IDs, wiring schematics, and equipment manuals to perform accurate installations, repairs, and modifications.
  • Execute rigging operations to move and position heavy equipment using cranes, hoists, chainfalls, and slings; prepare lift plans, calculate load weights, and coordinate lift teams for safe lifts.
  • Perform field machining tasks such as on-site boring, line boring, grinding, and tolerance restoration to repair component housings and align mating surfaces.
  • Commission and test machinery after installation: perform run-in procedures, balance rotating equipment, verify safety interlocks, and record baseline performance metrics.
  • Conduct safety-critical tasks including lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, hot work permits, and adherence to OSHA/NFPA standards when working on energized or hazardous systems.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, work orders, parts lists, and downtime reports in CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) to support spare parts management and continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate with electricians, controls technicians, production leads, and engineers to troubleshoot issues that cross mechanical and electrical domains, ensuring minimal production disruption.
  • Perform vibration analysis, thermography inspections, and other condition-monitoring activities, and escalate machine health concerns to the reliability or engineering teams.
  • Replace, align, and tension conveyor systems, sprockets, idlers, and drive components to maintain efficient product flow and reduce jam/damage incidents.
  • Conduct emergency repairs and rapid response troubleshooting outside normal hours when required to restore critical equipment and meet production commitments.
  • Install and adjust guarding, safety devices, and interlocks to comply with plant safety policies and prevent operator injuries.
  • Mentor apprentices and junior maintenance staff by demonstrating best-practices in mechanical repair, safe rigging, and accurate measurement techniques.
  • Coordinate materials and parts procurement: verify part numbers, collaborate with storeroom personnel, and advise on long-lead component sourcing to minimize future downtime.
  • Perform periodic calibration and verification of precision tools (torque wrenches, micrometers, calipers, lasers) to ensure measurement accuracy and quality workmanship.
  • Document and recommend design improvements or engineering changes to improve machine reliability, maintainability, and throughput.

Secondary Functions

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives (Kaizen, 5S, TPM) by identifying and implementing mechanical improvements to reduce waste and improve efficiency.
  • Assist maintenance planning and scheduling by providing accurate labor estimates, parts needs, and technical input for planned shutdowns.
  • Provide on-the-job training and safety coaching to production personnel on basic preventive maintenance and proper equipment operation techniques.
  • Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) and problem-solving teams to reduce repeat mechanical failures and enhance mean time between failures (MTBF).
  • Help develop and maintain spare parts inventories and recommend strategic stocking levels for critical mechanical components.
  • Contribute to capital project installations by providing mechanical expertise during planning, pre-assembly, and site installation phases.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Precision alignment (laser alignment, dial indicators) for rotating equipment.
  • Rigging and hoisting expertise with cranes, chainfalls, slings and load calculations.
  • Mechanical troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of pumps, gearboxes, conveyors, and rotating machinery.

  • Vibration analysis and thermography basics for condition monitoring and predictive maintenance.
  • Confined space entry, LOTO procedures, and familiarity with OSHA safety regulations.
  • Forklift and aerial lift operation (if required) and experience with safe material handling.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
High school diploma or GED with relevant mechanical, industrial maintenance, or trade school training.

Preferred Education:
Completed Millwright apprenticeship, trade school diploma, or Associate Degree in Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Technology, or Mechatronics.

Certifications such as Millwright Journeyman, OSHA-10/30, NCCER or equivalent, welding certifications, crane operator, and confined space/first aid are highly advantageous.
