Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Install, align, and commission new industrial machinery and heavy equipment, such as conveyors, pumps, motors, gearboxes, and production lines, according to blueprints and engineering specifications.
  • Execute precision maintenance tasks, including the precise alignment of shafts, couplings, and pulleys using laser alignment tools and dial indicators to minimize vibration and wear.
  • Perform complex troubleshooting and diagnostic procedures on malfunctioning mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems to identify root causes of failures and determine effective repair strategies.
  • Dismantle, overhaul, and reassemble machinery and major equipment components for repair or replacement, ensuring all parts are reinstalled to exact tolerances.
  • Read and interpret complex technical documents, including mechanical blueprints, schematics, diagrams, and service manuals, to guide installation and repair activities.
  • Operate heavy rigging equipment, such as cranes, hoists, and forklifts, to safely lift, move, and position large machinery and components during installation or maintenance projects.
  • Fabricate and repair machine parts using a variety of machine shop tools, including lathes, milling machines, grinders, and drill presses, to create custom-fit components or perform modifications.
  • Perform various welding and cutting tasks using ARC, TIG, and MIG welders and oxy-acetylene torches to repair structural components or fabricate custom brackets and guards.
  • Conduct routine preventive and predictive maintenance checks, including lubrication, parts inspection, fluid analysis, and vibration monitoring, to prevent unplanned downtime.
  • Respond promptly to emergency breakdowns and production interruptions, working efficiently under pressure to restore equipment to a safe and operational state.
  • Inspect and assess the condition of mechanical systems, identifying potential issues and recommending proactive maintenance or component upgrades to enhance reliability.
  • Install and maintain power transmission systems, including belts, chains, sprockets, and gear drives, ensuring proper tensioning and alignment for optimal performance.
  • Work with high-pressure hydraulic and pneumatic systems, repairing or replacing cylinders, valves, pumps, and hoses while adhering to strict safety standards.
  • Balance rotating equipment components to reduce vibration and extend the operational life of machinery.
  • Ensure all work is performed in strict compliance with company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and established procedures like Lockout/Tagout (LOTO).

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain detailed and accurate maintenance logs, work orders, and parts usage records within a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

  • Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) investigations to systematically identify and eliminate the underlying causes of recurring equipment failures.
  • Provide guidance and on-the-job training to apprentice mechanics and junior maintenance team members to build team capability.
  • Manage inventory of spare parts, tools, and materials, making recommendations for procurement to ensure critical components are readily available.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Precision Alignment: Expertise in using laser alignment systems and dial indicators for motors, pumps, and gearboxes.
  • Welding & Fabrication: Proficiency in MIG, TIG, and Stick welding for repairs and fabrication of brackets, guards, and structural components.

Educational Background

  • Journeyman Millwright Certification / Red Seal Endorsement (where applicable).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 4-10+ years of hands-on experience as a Millwright or Industrial Mechanic in a manufacturing, production, or heavy industrial environment.

Preferred: Experience in a specific industry (e.g., food and beverage, automotive, pulp and paper, power generation) with its associated specialized equipment. Proven experience with large-scale machinery installations and capital projects is highly desirable.
