Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Travel to various client sites in a company-provided service vehicle to perform diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on a wide range of commercial and residential HVAC/R systems.
  • Independently diagnose and troubleshoot complex issues with heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration units, including electrical, mechanical, and control system failures.
  • Execute comprehensive preventative maintenance schedules on HVAC equipment, which includes cleaning coils, changing filters, checking refrigerant levels, and calibrating controls to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Perform major component replacements, such as compressors, evaporator coils, condenser fan motors, and control boards, adhering strictly to manufacturer specifications and safety protocols.
  • Utilize a variety of advanced diagnostic tools, including multimeters, pressure gauges, combustion analyzers, and leak detectors, to accurately identify system malfunctions and ensure precise repairs.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate service records for each job, meticulously documenting work performed, parts used, time spent, and recommendations for future service using a mobile device or service software.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with clients, clearly explaining diagnoses, proposed solutions, and associated costs to ensure full transparency and customer satisfaction.
  • Prepare accurate and timely quotes and estimates for repairs and system replacements, providing clients with various options to meet their specific needs and budget.
  • Safely handle and manage refrigerants in full compliance with EPA regulations, including proper recovery, recycling, and charging procedures to protect the environment and ensure compliance.
  • Install new heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems, including associated ductwork, piping, and electrical wiring, ensuring all installations meet local building codes and industry best practices.
  • Respond promptly to emergency service calls, demonstrating a sense of urgency while maintaining a steadfast focus on safety and quality workmanship, often outside of normal business hours.
  • Read and interpret complex blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to understand system layouts and execute repair or installation procedures effectively.
  • Manage and maintain the inventory of parts, tools, and equipment within the assigned service vehicle, ensuring it is well-stocked and organized for maximum efficiency in the field.
  • Provide on-site training to customers on the proper operation and routine maintenance of their HVAC systems to empower them and reduce the frequency of unnecessary service calls.
  • Collaborate with dispatchers and service managers to efficiently plan and schedule daily routes and service appointments, optimizing time and resources.
  • Stay current with the latest HVAC technologies, industry trends, and updated regulatory standards through continuous training, professional development, and self-study.
  • Adhere to all company and client safety policies, including the mandatory use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe driving practices, and job site safety assessments.
  • Perform high-quality brazing, soldering, and welding as required for refrigerant line repairs and component installations.
  • Test and balance newly installed or repaired HVAC systems to ensure they are operating at peak efficiency and providing proper airflow and temperature control throughout the conditioned space.
  • Identify opportunities for system upgrades or enhancements that could improve energy efficiency and performance, presenting these value-added options to clients in a consultative manner.
  • Complete all required digital and paper reports in a timely and accurate fashion, ensuring seamless billing, warranty claims, and record-keeping processes.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule for after-hours and weekend emergency service, providing reliable and critical support to clients whenever needed.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist senior technicians or installation teams on larger-scale projects or complex system installations as required.
  • Provide mentorship and on-the-job guidance to apprentices or junior technicians joining the field team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Diagnostics: Strong proficiency in diagnosing and repairing commercial and/or residential HVAC systems, including rooftop units, split systems, VRF/VRV, chillers, and boilers.
  • Schematic Interpretation: Expertise in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, control diagrams, blueprints, and technical service manuals.
  • Tool Proficiency: Proficient in the use of specialized HVAC diagnostic tools, including digital multimeters, manifold gauge sets, refrigerant leak detectors, and combustion analyzers.
  • Refrigeration Expertise: A solid, practical understanding of the refrigeration cycle, air distribution systems, and hydronics.
  • EPA Certification: Must possess a valid EPA 608 Universal Certification for the proper and safe handling of all refrigerants.
  • Piping & Fabrication: Proven skills in brazing, soldering, and pipe fitting for refrigerant line sets and plumbing.
  • Controls Knowledge: Familiarity with low-voltage control systems, thermostats, and a basic understanding of Building Automation Systems (BAS).
  • Multi-Brand Experience: Experience working with a variety of major HVAC equipment brands such as Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Goodman, York, and Daikin.
    -Tech Savvy: Competency in using mobile applications and software on a tablet or smartphone for dispatching, service reporting, and invoicing.
  • Code Compliance: Strong working knowledge of local and national HVAC and building codes, as well as industry safety standards.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-7 years of hands-on field experience as a service technician in the HVAC industry.

Preferred:
