Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive diagnostic tests on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical circuits, and powertrain components to accurately identify malfunctions and determine the most effective repair strategy.
  • Execute a wide range of on-site repairs, from minor adjustments to complete engine or transmission overhauls, on heavy equipment such as excavators, loaders, dozers, pavers, and cranes.
  • Conduct scheduled preventative maintenance (PM) services, including fluid and filter changes, lubrication, and multi-point inspections, to enhance equipment reliability and longevity.
  • Respond promptly and efficiently to emergency service calls to troubleshoot and resolve unexpected equipment breakdowns, aiming to minimize operational downtime.
  • Utilize advanced electronic diagnostic tools and OEM software to interface with modern equipment control modules, read fault codes, and calibrate systems.
  • Repair and maintain complex hydraulic systems, including pumps, motors, valves, and cylinders, ensuring proper pressure and flow specifications are met.
  • Troubleshoot and repair intricate 12V/24V electrical systems, including wiring harnesses, sensors, lighting, and starting/charging circuits.
  • Perform welding and fabrication tasks (Stick, MIG) to repair structural damage to buckets, booms, frames, and other equipment attachments.
  • Rebuild, replace, and adjust major components such as engines, transmissions, differentials, and final drives in a field environment.
  • Service and repair air and hydraulic brake systems, suspension components, and steering systems on commercial trucks and heavy machinery.
  • Maintain and repair auxiliary systems, including HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) and telematics/GPS hardware on company assets.
  • Ensure all repairs and maintenance activities are performed in strict accordance with manufacturer guidelines, industry best practices, and company safety protocols.
  • Interpret technical manuals, electrical schematics, and hydraulic diagrams to guide troubleshooting and repair procedures.
  • Conduct thorough post-repair testing and operational checks to verify that the equipment is functioning correctly and safely before returning it to service.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date inventory of parts, tools, and supplies within the assigned service vehicle, reordering as necessary.
  • Complete detailed and timely documentation for all work performed, including service reports, time logs, and parts usage, often using a mobile device or tablet.
  • Communicate professionally with equipment operators, site supervisors, and dispatchers to provide status updates, explain repairs, and offer recommendations for proper equipment operation.
  • Uphold a clean, organized, and safe work environment, both in the service truck and at the field repair site.
  • Participate in ongoing technical training and professional development to stay current with new equipment models, technologies, and repair techniques.
  • Provide mentorship and on-the-job guidance to apprentice mechanics or less experienced technicians.
  • Assist in identifying and diagnosing recurring equipment issues to contribute to long-term fleet management and procurement strategies.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Diesel Engine Diagnostics: Deep proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing modern diesel engines (e.g., Cummins, Caterpillar, Detroit, PACCAR).
  • Hydraulic System Expertise: Strong ability to read hydraulic schematics and diagnose/repair complex open and closed-loop systems.
  • Electrical & Electronic Systems: Competency in diagnosing and repairing 12/24V electrical systems, CAN bus networks, and using diagnostic software (e.g., CAT ET, Cummins INSITE).
  • Powertrain & Drivetrain Repair: Hands-on experience with transmissions, differentials, axles, and final drives.
  • Welding and Fabrication: Proficiency in Stick (SMAW) and MIG (GMAW) welding for structural repairs is highly valued.
  • Brake and Suspension Systems: Knowledge of air brake, hydraulic brake, and heavy-duty suspension systems.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-7 years of documented, hands-on experience performing maintenance and repair on heavy construction equipment, agricultural machinery, or a fleet of heavy-duty trucks.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience working in a mobile or field service capacity is highly desirable. Manufacturer-specific certifications (e.g., Caterpillar, John Deere, Komatsu) and/or ASE certifications (T-Series) are a significant advantage. A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is often preferred or required.
