Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design and implement a comprehensive and progressive modern dance curriculum for various age groups and skill levels, ensuring a logical sequence of learning.
  • Instruct students in the foundational principles, techniques, and history of modern dance, including established methodologies such as Graham, Limón, Horton, and release-based techniques.
  • Choreograph original, innovative, and age-appropriate dance pieces for student showcases, annual recitals, and potential community performances, highlighting student growth and artistry.
  • Lead dynamic, structured, and inspiring class sessions that include thorough warm-ups, center work, across-the-floor progressions, and complex combinations.
  • Provide constructive, individualized, and actionable feedback to students on their technique, alignment, and artistic expression to foster tangible improvement and self-awareness.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and emotionally safe classroom environment that encourages risk-taking, self-expression, and mutual respect among all students.
  • Assess and monitor student progress through ongoing observation, skill evaluations, and performance readiness, maintaining clear records of their developmental milestones.
  • Educate students on dance history, key choreographers, musicality, and the cultural context of modern and contemporary dance to create well-rounded artists.
  • Incorporate principles of anatomy, kinesiology, and safe dance practices into all instruction to promote dancer wellness and minimize the risk of injury.
  • Mentor and guide dedicated students, offering advice on further training opportunities, summer intensives, higher education, and potential career paths in the performing arts.

  • Communicate proactively and professionally with parents and guardians regarding student progress, attendance, scheduling, and studio policies.
  • Participate actively in faculty meetings, professional development workshops, and staff training sessions to contribute to the school's artistic vision and pedagogical standards.
  • Assist in the audition and placement process for new and returning students to ensure they are enrolled in the most appropriate and challenging class level.
  • Contribute to the studio's marketing and social media presence by providing high-quality photos, videos, and written content from classes and rehearsals.
