Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the complete setup and changeover of injection molds and related auxiliary equipment, ensuring all connections (water, air, hydraulics, electrical) are secure and correct.
  • Start up, operate, and shut down injection molding machines according to established safety protocols and standard operating procedures.
  • Develop and optimize robust molding processes by adjusting machine parameters such as temperature, pressure, injection speed, and cooling times to achieve quality and efficiency targets.
  • Systematically troubleshoot and resolve molding defects, including but not limited to flash, short shots, sink marks, warpage, and cosmetic flaws, documenting corrective actions taken.
  • Perform first and last piece inspections to verify parts meet all quality standards and engineering specifications before and after a production run.
  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance on molds, such as cleaning parting lines, vents, and mold surfaces, and lubricating moving components to ensure longevity and performance.
  • Read and interpret part blueprints and technical schematics to understand critical dimensions, tolerances, and quality requirements.
  • Manage the handling, drying, and loading of various plastic resins, ensuring material is prepared correctly to prevent processing issues.
  • Set up and program robotic end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) and other automation equipment used for part removal and handling.
  • Operate overhead cranes, hoists, and forklifts safely and proficiently for the transportation and installation of heavy molds.
  • Monitor all molding machines and auxiliary equipment during production runs, responding promptly to alarms and process deviations to minimize downtime and scrap.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed documentation, including process setup sheets, production logs, maintenance records, and quality inspection reports.
  • Collaborate closely with the Quality Assurance team to analyze part defects and implement effective, long-term corrective actions.
  • Support the validation of new molds, materials, and processes (IQ/OQ/PQ) by executing test runs and collecting critical data for the engineering team.
  • Provide technical guidance and on-the-job training to Machine Operators and other production personnel to enhance their skills and understanding of the molding process.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives, such as Kaizen events and 5S programs, to enhance workplace safety, organization, and efficiency.
  • Perform minor repairs on molds and molding equipment, and coordinate with the maintenance and tool room departments for more extensive repairs.
  • Ensure all safety guards and emergency stops on equipment are in place and functioning correctly before and during operation.
  • Verify that the correct bill of materials, including resin, colorants, and packaging, is being used for each specific job order.
  • Analyze and document cycle times, scrap rates, and machine downtime to identify trends and opportunities for process improvement.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide input on equipment upgrades and tooling improvements to enhance production capabilities and safety.
  • Work closely with the quality and production planning departments to meet customer requirements and production schedules.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Injection Molding Process Control: Deep understanding of scientific or decoupled molding principles for process optimization and troubleshooting.
  • Mold Setup and Changeover: Proficiency in safely and efficiently installing, removing, and setting up injection molds and auxiliary equipment.
  • Process Troubleshooting: Expertise in diagnosing and resolving a wide range of molding defects and equipment malfunctions.
  • Plastics Material Knowledge: Familiarity with the properties and processing characteristics of various commodity and engineering-grade resins.
  • Robotics and Automation: Experience setting up and operating robotic part pickers and end-of-arm tooling (EOAT).
  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Ability to interpret technical drawings to understand part geometry, tolerances, and mold construction.
  • Heavy Equipment Operation: Certified or proficient in operating overhead cranes and forklifts for mold handling.
  • Mold Maintenance: Skills in performing basic mold cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs.
  • Quality Inspection Tools: Competence in using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other measurement tools for part verification.
  • Machine Control Systems: Familiarity with various press controller interfaces (e.g., Engel, Arburg, Husky, Toshiba, Nissei).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Technical Certificate or an Associate's Degree in a relevant field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • Formal training or certification in plastic injection molding (e.g., RJG, Paulson).
  • Experience in a regulated industry such as medical device, automotive, or aerospace manufacturing.
