Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Perform comprehensive diagnostic tests on all vehicle systems to accurately identify faults and malfunctions using advanced diagnostic equipment, scan tools, and OEM-specific software.
Execute complex repairs on gasoline and diesel engines, including timing belts/chains, head gaskets, and full engine rebuilds, ensuring all work meets or exceeds manufacturer specifications.
Service and repair vehicle transmission systems, including automatic, manual, and CVT, performing fluid exchanges, component replacements, and complete overhauls.
Conduct thorough inspections and repairs of vehicle braking systems, including hydraulic systems, ABS components, electronic brake-force distribution, brake pads, rotors, and calipers.
Diagnose and resolve intricate electrical system issues, from wiring harnesses and lighting to complex computer-controlled systems, ECUs, and onboard communication networks.
Perform routine and preventative maintenance, such as oil changes, tire rotations, and multi-point inspections, in accordance with dealership and factory-recommended service schedules.
Utilize digital and paper-based service manuals, wiring diagrams, and technical service bulletins (TSBs) to guide repair procedures and stay current with industry updates.
Maintain detailed and accurate records of all services performed, parts used, and labor time for each vehicle within our digital repair order system.
Communicate effectively with Service Advisors to provide clear, concise explanations of diagnosed issues, recommended repairs, required parts, and estimated timelines for completion.
Conduct final quality control inspections and road tests to verify that all repairs are completed correctly and the vehicle operates safely, efficiently, and to the customer's satisfaction.
Perform precision wheel alignments and balance tires using modern alignment racks and computerized balancing equipment to ensure proper vehicle handling and tire wear.
Service and repair vehicle heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, including refrigerant recovery, recharging, and component replacement in compliance with regulations.
Inspect, diagnose, and replace components of the suspension and steering systems, such as shocks, struts, control arms, ball joints, and tie rod ends.

Secondary Functions

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, adhering to all company safety protocols, OSHA guidelines, and environmental regulations.
Manage and maintain shop equipment and personal tools, ensuring they are in good working order and reporting any needs for repair or replacement.
Assist in training and mentoring apprentice mechanics, sharing knowledge and best practices for vehicle repair, diagnostics, and shop procedures.
Stay abreast of emerging automotive technology, including hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) systems, through continuous factory training and professional development.
Collaborate with the parts department to ensure the correct parts are sourced, ordered, and available for scheduled repairs to maximize workshop efficiency.
Handle and dispose of hazardous materials, such as used oil, coolant, and other automotive fluids, in strict compliance with environmental and safety standards.
Perform pre-delivery inspections (PDI) on new and pre-owned vehicles to ensure they meet quality and safety standards before being presented to customers.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certifications: A1-A8 certifications are highly desirable, with Master Technician and L1/L3 Advanced Level Specialist certifications being a significant plus.
Advanced Diagnostic Proficiency: Expertise in using modern scan tools (e.g., Snap-on, Autel), lab scopes, and OEM-specific diagnostic software to pinpoint complex issues.
Engine Performance & Repair: Deep knowledge of internal combustion engine theory, repair procedures, and performance tuning.
Brake System Expertise: Comprehensive ability to service and repair hydraulic, electronic, and anti-lock braking systems.
Vehicle Electrical Systems: Strong skills in reading wiring diagrams, troubleshooting electrical faults, and repairing circuits, sensors, and modules.
Steering & Suspension Systems: Ability to diagnose and repair all components related to vehicle steering, suspension, and alignment.
HVAC System Service: Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing automotive air conditioning systems, including holding a Section 609 certification.
Drivetrain & Transmission Repair: Experience in servicing and repairing manual/automatic transmissions, differentials, and transfer cases.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED.
Valid Driver's License and a clean driving record.

Preferred Education:

Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology from an accredited institution.
Completion of a certified automotive vocational or trade school program.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

3-5+ years of hands-on experience as a professional motor mechanic or automotive technician in a dealership or independent repair shop setting.

Verifiable experience in advanced diagnostics, including electrical and engine performance.
A proven track record of high-quality work and efficiency (flat-rate hours).
