Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive and systematic vehicle inspections and diagnostic tests to accurately identify mechanical, electrical, and electronic malfunctions.
  • Execute a wide range of routine maintenance services, including oil and filter changes, tire rotations, fluid exchanges, and multi-point inspections, adhering strictly to manufacturer specifications.
  • Diagnose complex performance issues related to engines, transmissions, and drivetrains using advanced computer diagnostic equipment and specialized tools.
  • Skillfully repair and replace major automotive components, such as engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, and suspension assemblies.
  • Service and repair vehicle braking systems, including hydraulic components, anti-lock brake systems (ABS), and traction control systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve intricate issues within vehicle electrical systems, including wiring harnesses, lighting, onboard computers (ECUs), and charging/starting systems.
  • Perform diagnostics, servicing, and repairs on climate control and HVAC systems, ensuring proper function and refrigerant handling compliance.
  • Conduct precise wheel alignments, tire mounting, and balancing services to ensure optimal vehicle handling and tire longevity.
  • Interpret and utilize technical manuals, service bulletins, wiring diagrams, and online databases to guide complex repair and diagnostic procedures.
  • Road test vehicles both before and after service to verify customer complaints and confirm that repairs have resolved the issue completely.
  • Maintain detailed, accurate, and timely records of all services performed, parts used, and labor time for each vehicle repair order.
  • Communicate technical findings, repair recommendations, and estimated costs clearly and effectively to service advisors and customers.
  • Calibrate and service Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), including cameras, radar, and sensors, to ensure their correct operation.
  • Stay current with emerging automotive technologies, including hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) systems, through continuous training and professional development.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, adhering to all shop safety protocols and environmental regulations.
  • Properly use and maintain all shop tools and diagnostic equipment, ensuring they are in good working order and calibrated as required.
  • Perform state-mandated vehicle safety and emissions inspections, and carry out necessary repairs to bring vehicles into compliance.
  • Handle warranty-related repairs in strict accordance with manufacturer guidelines and documentation requirements.
  • Mentor, train, and provide technical guidance to apprentice technicians and junior team members to foster a culture of learning and skill development.
  • Address and resolve customer concerns regarding vehicle performance, providing clear technical explanations and ensuring customer satisfaction with the repair work.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Diagnostic Proficiency: Expertise in using OBD-II scanners, oscilloscopes, multimeters, and manufacturer-specific diagnostic software to pinpoint faults.
  • Engine Performance & Repair: Deep knowledge of internal combustion engine theory, performance tuning, and major engine repair/rebuilding.
  • Electrical System Troubleshooting: Ability to read and interpret complex wiring diagrams to diagnose and repair shorts, opens, and other electrical faults.
  • Brake System Expertise: Comprehensive understanding of hydraulic, disc, drum, and anti-lock brake (ABS) systems.
  • Steering & Suspension Service: Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing steering linkages, power steering systems, and various suspension types, including electronic and air suspension.
  • HVAC Certification: Certified and skilled in servicing automotive air conditioning systems, including refrigerant recovery and recharging (e.g., Section 609 certified).
  • Transmission & Drivetrain Knowledge: Competency in diagnosing and servicing automatic and manual transmissions, differentials, transfer cases, and axles.
  • ASE Certifications: Possession of or ability to obtain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in various areas (A1-A8).
  • Hybrid & Electric Vehicle (EV) Systems: Knowledge of high-voltage battery systems, electric motors, and regenerative braking systems.
  • ADAS Calibration: Experience with the equipment and procedures required to calibrate cameras and sensors for lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, etc.
