Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely and proficiently operate a 16 to 26-foot moving truck (box truck), adhering to all DOT regulations, traffic laws, and company safety protocols.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, meticulously checking fluid levels, tire pressure, brakes, and lights to ensure the vehicle is in optimal and safe working condition.
  • Act as the on-site team leader and primary point of contact for clients, clearly communicating the moving plan, addressing any questions, and providing reassurance throughout the entire process.
  • Expertly wrap furniture and fragile items with moving pads, shrink wrap, and other protective materials to prevent scratches, dents, and breakage during transport.
  • Strategically load and organize household goods, furniture, and boxes into the moving truck, ensuring proper weight distribution and using pads, straps, and braces to secure the load and prevent shifting or damage.
  • Carefully and efficiently unload items from the truck and place them in the client's new home or office according to their specific instructions and designated room layout.
  • Perform basic disassembly of furniture (e.g., bed frames, table legs) before the move and reassembly upon arrival at the destination.
  • Navigate routes efficiently using GPS and local knowledge, anticipating potential traffic or access issues at the destination to ensure on-time arrival.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional appearance for yourself, your crew, and the moving vehicle to uphold the company's brand image.
  • Handle, complete, and process all move-related paperwork accurately, including bills of lading, inventory lists, and payment transactions at the conclusion of the job.
  • Lead and motivate a moving crew of 2-5 members, delegating tasks effectively and fostering a positive, productive, and safe work environment.
  • Proactively problem-solve on-site challenges, such as navigating narrow stairwells, handling unexpectedly heavy items, or adjusting the plan to accommodate client requests.
  • Provide exceptional, five-star customer service from the initial greeting to the final walkthrough, aiming to exceed client expectations and generate positive reviews and referrals.
  • Train new movers on proper lifting techniques, packing procedures, and customer service standards to ensure consistency and quality across the team.
  • Lift and carry heavy items, often weighing over 75 pounds, continuously throughout the day, both independently and as part of a team.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain the cleanliness and stock of the moving truck, ensuring it is always equipped with the necessary pads, dollies, straps, and tools.
  • Assist in the warehouse with organizing equipment, loading supplies, and preparing for upcoming jobs when not assigned to a specific move.
  • Communicate effectively with the dispatch or operations manager throughout the day, providing status updates on job progress, delays, or any on-site issues.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and safety training sessions, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement and safety awareness.
  • Upsell additional services when appropriate, such as packing supplies or long-term storage solutions, in a helpful and non-aggressive manner.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Commercial Driving: Proven ability to safely operate large box trucks (up to 26 ft); a specific license class (e.g., Class D, Chauffeur's, or Non-CDL Class C) is required depending on state regulations.
  • DOT Compliance: Knowledge of and adherence to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, including maintaining a valid DOT medical card.
  • Safe Lifting Techniques: Proper form and technique for lifting, carrying, and maneuvering heavy and awkward objects to prevent injury and property damage.
  • Packing & Wrapping: Skill in using moving blankets, shrink wrap, and tape to properly protect furniture and fragile items.
  • Spatial Reasoning: Excellent spatial awareness for efficiently loading a truck in a "Tetris-like" manner to maximize space and secure items.
  • Equipment Operation: Proficiency in using moving equipment such as hand trucks, appliance dollies, and furniture sliders.
  • Basic Mechanical Aptitude: Ability to perform pre-trip/post-trip vehicle inspections and identify potential maintenance issues.
