Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive patient intakes, including detailed medical history, family history, psychosocial assessment, lifestyle analysis, and a thorough review of systems under direct supervision.
  • Perform relevant physical examinations and diagnostic procedures as delegated and supervised by the licensed Naturopathic Doctor to gather essential clinical data.
  • Assist in the formulation of differential diagnoses by critically analyzing and integrating patient history, physical exam findings, and conventional and functional laboratory results.
  • Develop and propose individualized, evidence-informed naturopathic treatment plans, including therapeutic rationales, for review, modification, and final approval by the supervising ND.
  • Research and present current, evidence-based information on various naturopathic modalities, such as botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, homeopathy, and lifestyle counseling.
  • Educate patients clearly and compassionately on their health conditions and the rationale behind their personalized treatment plans, empowering them to be active participants in their healing journey.
  • Prepare and dispense custom botanical medicine formulas, nutritional supplements, and other therapeutic agents as prescribed by the supervising physician.
  • Administer or assist with in-office therapies, such as hydrotherapy, physical medicine, or intravenous (IV) nutrient therapy, in accordance with clinic scope and state regulations.
  • Maintain meticulous, accurate, and timely patient records within the electronic health record (EHR) system, ensuring all encounters, plans, and progress notes are documented professionally.
  • Order and interpret a wide range of conventional and functional laboratory tests, presenting key findings and their clinical significance to the supervising physician for final diagnosis.
  • Conduct structured follow-up appointments to monitor patient progress, evaluate the efficacy of treatments, and collaboratively make necessary adjustments to the care plan.
  • Collaborate effectively with the supervising ND and other allied healthcare providers (e.g., acupuncturists, therapists) to ensure seamless, integrated, and coordinated patient care.
  • Create detailed and user-friendly patient education materials, including customized dietary guidelines, lifestyle recommendation handouts, and supplement instruction sheets.
  • Manage professional patient communications, including phone calls and secure portal messages, responding to inquiries appropriately within the defined scope of an intern's role.
  • Participate actively in clinical grand rounds and case review meetings, presenting patient cases and contributing to collaborative discussions on treatment strategies.
  • Shadow the supervising ND during complex patient visits to observe advanced clinical reasoning, challenging patient management techniques, and nuanced communication styles.
  • Stay current with emerging research and advancements in naturopathic and integrative medicine by consistently reviewing scientific literature and attending professional development events.
  • Assist in the management of the clinic's natural dispensary, including inventory control, product sourcing, quality assurance, and practitioner education on new products.
  • Support the development and refinement of clinic protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for various clinical and administrative tasks to improve efficiency and quality of care.
  • Engage in community outreach and wellness education initiatives, such as delivering workshops or health talks, to promote public health and represent the clinic professionally.
  • Provide counseling on foundational health pillars, including stress management techniques, sleep hygiene optimization, and appropriate physical activity recommendations.
  • Perform specialized assessments, such as body composition analysis, heart rate variability (HRV), or functional movement screens, and interpret the results to inform treatment plans.
