Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform complex troubleshooting, fault isolation, and corrective maintenance on naval combat systems, including radar, sonar, and electronic warfare (EW) equipment, to ensure maximum operational availability.
- Install, integrate, and test new or modified shipboard electronic systems and subsystems in accordance with engineering drawings, technical manuals, and ship alteration (SHIPALT) instructions.
- Conduct preventative maintenance routines and system operational verifications on navigation, communication, and computer systems to identify and mitigate potential failures before they occur.
- Execute system-level testing and operational checks on integrated weapon systems, ensuring all components function according to design specifications and safety standards.
- Read, interpret, and work from complex technical documents, including engineering blueprints, system schematics, wiring diagrams, and installation control drawings (ICDs).
- Utilize a wide range of specialized electronic test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, multimeters, and network analyzers, to diagnose and resolve system faults.
- Perform physical installation of system hardware, including mounting equipment racks, running and terminating fiber optic and copper cables, and ensuring proper connections.
- Support shipboard system light-off, post-overhaul sea trials, and other underway testing events, providing real-time technical support and system analysis.
- Manage the configuration of onboard systems, performing software/firmware updates and hardware replacements as directed by engineering change proposals (ECPs).
- Conduct detailed inspections and assessments of system installations performed by shipyards or other contractors to ensure compliance with naval standards and specifications.
- Isolate and repair or replace faulty components at the lowest replaceable unit (LRU) level, including circuit cards, power supplies, and display consoles.
- Provide direct, on-site technical assistance to ship's force personnel for the operation and maintenance of complex electronic and mechanical systems.
- Perform precision alignments and calibrations of sensor systems, such as radar antennas and navigation equipment, to guarantee optimal performance and accuracy.
- Document and report all maintenance actions, system discrepancies, and test results with a high degree of accuracy in designated maintenance management systems.
- Ensure all work is performed in strict adherence to safety protocols, including tag-out procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, and hazardous material handling.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain meticulous and accurate records of all maintenance actions, system configurations, and parts inventory using designated maintenance management systems (MMS).
- Provide on-the-job training and technical guidance to junior technicians and ship's force personnel on system operation and basic maintenance procedures.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to provide feedback on system performance, reliability issues, and potential design improvements discovered during fieldwork.
- Assist in the development and validation of technical documentation, including maintenance procedures, troubleshooting guides, and user manuals.
- Support inventory management by identifying, tracking, and ordering necessary repair parts, tools, and consumables to support maintenance activities.
- Participate in pre-installation site surveys and ship-checks to identify and document existing ship conditions, potential interferences, and installation requirements.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings, military specifications, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Extensive experience with electronic test equipment, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, and Time Domain Reflectometers (TDRs).
- Hands-on knowledge of shipboard electrical, electronic, and/or mechanical systems (e.g., radar, sonar, communications, C4I, Aegis, SSDS).
- Competency in terminating and testing both fiber optic and multi-conductor copper cables in a maritime environment.
- Familiarity with soldering techniques and circuit board repair that meet high-reliability standards (e.g., IPC-J-STD-001).
- Ability to perform system software loading, configuration, and diagnostic testing.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:
High School Diploma or GED coupled with formal technical training from a military 'A' or 'C' school, an accredited vocational institution, or equivalent industry certification.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of hands-on experience performing installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of complex electronic or mechanical systems.

- Prior experience as a US Navy Electronics Technician (ET), Fire Controlman (FC), Sonar Technician (STG/STS), or a similar military occupational specialty is highly desirable.
- Experience working in a shipyard environment or aboard active US Navy vessels.
- An active DoD Security Clearance (Secret or higher) is often required and is highly preferred for consideration.
