Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide direct, comprehensive medical care for a diverse population of critically ill premature and full-term infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
  • Lead and coordinate the multidisciplinary care team, including neonatal nurse practitioners, residents, nurses, respiratory therapists, and social workers, to ensure cohesive and holistic patient management.
  • Perform and supervise complex neonatal procedures, such as endotracheal intubation, umbilical line placement, chest tube insertion, lumbar punctures, and pericardiocentesis.
  • Manage advanced respiratory support, including conventional mechanical ventilation, high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), and inhaled nitric oxide therapy.
  • Diagnose and treat a wide spectrum of complex neonatal conditions, including respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, necrotizing enterocolitis, persistent pulmonary hypertension, and congenital anomalies.
  • Attend high-risk deliveries and lead neonatal resuscitation and stabilization efforts in the delivery room and operating room.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously evaluate individualized patient care plans, making critical adjustments based on patient response and clinical data.
  • Provide prenatal consultations for expectant parents with high-risk pregnancies to anticipate neonatal needs, establish a care plan, and provide counseling.
  • Communicate complex medical information, prognosis, and treatment plans effectively and compassionately with parents and families, fostering a transparent and supportive family-centered care environment.
  • Direct and oversee the safe and efficient transport of critically ill infants from referring hospitals via our dedicated neonatal ground or air transport team.
  • Actively participate in the development, implementation, and review of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, protocols, and quality improvement (QI) initiatives within the NICU.
  • Provide formal and informal clinical education, mentorship, and supervision to pediatric residents, medical students, and fellows rotating through the neonatology service.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete medical documentation within the electronic health record (EHR) system, ensuring continuity of care and regulatory compliance.
  • Serve on departmental and hospital-wide committees related to patient safety, quality assurance, ethics, and clinical excellence.
  • Engage in and support scholarly activities, including participating in clinical research, presenting at conferences, and contributing to medical publications.
  • Expertly interpret a variety of diagnostic tests, including radiographic images, laboratory results, blood gas analyses, and cranial ultrasounds.
  • Collaborate seamlessly with a wide range of pediatric subspecialists, such as pediatric surgeons, cardiologists, and neurologists, to provide integrated and comprehensive patient care.
  • Oversee the complex nutritional management for neonates, including the formulation and adjustment of parenteral and enteral nutrition to optimize growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes.
  • Implement and manage advanced therapeutic interventions, including therapeutic hypothermia for infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).
  • Participate equitably in a rotating on-call schedule to provide 24/7 in-house coverage for the NICU, ensuring continuous expert oversight.
  • Lead and facilitate family care conferences to discuss prognosis, establish goals of care, and navigate complex ethical decisions with sensitivity and professionalism.
  • Provide follow-up care for high-risk NICU graduates in a dedicated outpatient clinic setting to monitor long-term growth and developmental progress.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in community outreach and educational programs related to newborn health, safe sleep, and premature infant care.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning and long-term development of the neonatology service line and facilities.
  • Collaborate with administration in the review and selection of new medical equipment and technologies for the NICU.
  • Mentor junior faculty, fellows, and advanced practice providers within the division to foster professional growth and clinical excellence.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics.
  • Current and unrestricted state medical license.
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) Instructor or Provider certification.
  • Expertise in advanced neonatal airway management and endotracheal intubation.
  • Proficiency in managing all modes of mechanical ventilation (conventional, HFOV) and non-invasive respiratory support (CPAP, NIPPV).
  • Demonstrated skill in placing and managing central and peripheral vascular access, including umbilical arterial/venous catheters and PICC lines.
  • Experience with advanced therapeutic modalities such as inhaled nitric oxide (iNO), surfactant administration, and whole-body cooling for HIE.
  • Competency in performing and interpreting point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), particularly cranial ultrasonography.
  • Deep knowledge of neonatal pharmacology, fluid/electrolyte management, and parenteral/enteral nutrition formulation.
  • Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic or Cerner for documentation, orders, and patient data review.
  • Experience with Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) management is highly desirable but not required.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school.
  • Successful completion of a 3-year residency in Pediatrics.
  • Successful completion of a 3-year fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.

Preferred Education:

  • An additional advanced degree (e.g., MPH, MSc, MEd, MBA) is valued, particularly for academic or leadership roles.

Experience Requirements
