Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide strong leadership, mentorship, and career development guidance to a 24x7x365 Network Operations Center (NOC) team, fostering a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and proactive problem-solving.
  • Direct the comprehensive monitoring of all network infrastructure components, including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and wireless systems, to ensure optimal performance and immediate detection of anomalies.
  • Act as the senior escalation point for all major network incidents, taking command of incident response efforts to orchestrate rapid troubleshooting, mitigation, and resolution while ensuring clear communication to stakeholders.
  • Develop, implement, and refine operational policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and best practices for network monitoring, incident management, and change control, adhering to ITIL or similar frameworks.
  • Guarantee the achievement of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and operational metrics by continuously analyzing network performance data and implementing service improvement plans.
  • Oversee the entire incident lifecycle, from initial alert to root cause analysis (RCA), ensuring that underlying issues are identified and permanent solutions are implemented to prevent recurrence.
  • Drive the strategy for network capacity planning and performance management, forecasting future needs and initiating projects to scale the infrastructure ahead of demand.
  • Manage relationships with telecommunications carriers, hardware/software vendors, and service providers, holding them accountable for performance and negotiating favorable contracts and terms.
  • Spearhead the development and execution of network disaster recovery and business continuity plans, including regular testing and validation to ensure service resilience.
  • Champion automation initiatives within the NOC, identifying opportunities to streamline repetitive tasks, improve response times, and reduce human error using scripting and modern tooling.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, set clear objectives, and manage the staffing, scheduling, and overall performance of the network operations team to ensure adequate coverage and skill alignment.
  • Collaborate closely with the Cybersecurity team to implement and enforce network security policies, respond to security events, and ensure the network is hardened against threats.
  • Maintain a comprehensive and accurate inventory of all network assets, managing the entire lifecycle from procurement and deployment to decommissioning and disposal.
  • Prepare and present detailed reports on network health, uptime, incident trends, and team performance to IT leadership and key business stakeholders.
  • Guide the team in the configuration, maintenance, and optimization of network monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds, Datadog, Nagios) to ensure effective and comprehensive visibility.

Secondary Functions

  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of meticulous technical documentation for network architecture, configurations, and operational procedures.
  • Develop and manage the annual operational and capital expense budgets for the Network Operations department, ensuring fiscal responsibility and strategic investment.
  • Evaluate emerging network technologies, tools, and methodologies, providing recommendations to senior leadership for strategic enhancements and modernization.
  • Lead and participate in cross-functional project teams to deliver new network services and infrastructure upgrades on time and within budget.

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Networking Protocols: Deep, hands-on expertise in enterprise-level routing (BGP, OSPF) and switching (VLANs, STP), with a strong understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Network Security: Proficiency in configuring and managing next-generation firewalls (e.g., Palo Alto, Fortinet), VPNs (IPSec, SSL), and access control lists (ACLs).
  • Network Monitoring & Management Tools: Extensive experience with industry-standard monitoring platforms such as SolarWinds, PRTG, Nagios, Datadog, or similar, including custom alert and report configuration.
  • IT Service Management (ITSM): Strong practical knowledge and preferably certification in ITIL frameworks, particularly in Incident, Problem, and Change Management.
  • Load Balancing: Solid understanding and practical experience with application delivery controllers and load balancers like F5 BIG-IP or Citrix NetScaler.
  • SD-WAN & Cloud Networking: Familiarity with modern SD-WAN technologies and experience with network principles in public cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Scripting & Automation: Working knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell, Ansible) to automate network tasks and device configurations.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent combination of professional experience and technical certifications.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree in a related discipline.
  • Industry-recognized certifications such as CCNP, CCIE, or JNCIE are highly desirable.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • Experience managing a 24x7 operational team in a large-scale, high-availability enterprise environment.
  • Demonstrated success in maturing an operations team through process improvement, automation, and strategic planning.
